Weekly Menu & Grocery Update

27 Tuesday Jan 2015

This is another strange week.  I’m going out twice and the older ones are going away next weekend so those of us left will be having some toddler fare.  There’s also this big storm.

I did a small grocery run last week.

I’ll be doing that again this week.  They have a few (4-5) coupons that are very good every week, but require you to purchase at least $25 after coupons.   That’s why you see a tiny container of peanut butter in the picture above.  This week I’ll be using 3 of said coupons – 1 lb of baby carrots, paper towels, and Oreos (which I only buy on this level of sale).  I may even go around twice since I have some other sale items to get and paper towels bring me closer to $25 than the usual coupon items.

Here’s the meal plan for this week.

Saturday:
Kids: poached eggs
Adults: homemade pizza

Sunday:
Butter poached chicken (in oven)
Carrots
Homemade bread

Monday:
Fajitas

Tuesday:
Leftover pulled pork sandwiches

Wednesday:
Chicken & artichokes
Mashed potatoes

Thursday:
Macaroni & cheese

Friday:
Grilled cheese sandwiches

There aren’t so many coupons this week, but there are a few good sales.  I did a stock up trip to Shaw’s that should last 6-8 weeks.  The photo below is my visit to Stop and Shop ($57.97 after savings).  Tomorrow I’ll be going to BJs and Target (more for birthday presents vs groceries).

Winter baseball has started which interferes with Saturday dinner so I’m going to have to think about how we’ll handle that going forward.  This week we just repeated a Friday menu.

Here’s the meal plan for this week.

Adults: Homemade pizza

Sunday:
Leftover leg of lamb
Brussels sprouts
Mashed potatoes

Monday:
Leftover beef stew
Green beans
Portuguese Corn Bread

Tuesday (I won’t be home for dinner.):

Another set of Stop & Shop coupons became available this week.  They have excellent deals on potatoes and oil with at least a $25 purchase so I’m going twice for those.  I also have two $5 off coupons plus 300 gas points if I spend $50 so one of those trips will be somewhat larger.  I have a few other coupons to use so I need to scan $28 before coupons once and $64 before coupons the second time, which will result in actual spending of $25 and $45 respectively.  I suspect I’ll go slightly over this, but not by much.

Here’s the meal plan for this week.

Saturday:
Shepard’s pie
Bread machine bread
Green beans

Sunday:
Chicken & dumplings
Leftover bread

Monday:
Beef stew
Oatmeal bread

Tuesday:
Fajitas

Wednesday:
Baked cod
Sweet potatoes
Salad

Thursday:
Leg of lamb
Brussels sprouts
Baked potato

Friday:
Kids: poached eggs
Adults: homemade pizza

Can One Have Too Many Groceries?

If it was summer I’d be in big trouble.  But its not so our mudroom is relatively cool and good for storage.  As such I have an entire table of food.

IMG_2796

We will eat a bunch over the next two weeks and then it will slowly get packed into the pantry.  The exceptions will be the two open topped boxes you see as I’ve found this to be the best winter storage solution for potatoes, onions, etc.  It doesn’t work in the summer heat, but that’s not an issue right now.

I did make a regular trip to the grocery store this week too.

Tuesday:

The coupons are coming fast and furious around here from both Stop & Shop and Wegman’s so I’ve really been loading up our pantry this fall.  Here’s what I got for $48.07 this week at Stop & Shop.  (There were some bananas too, but the kids were eating them for lunch while I was taking this picture.)

Kids can Cook

I decided to start involving the boys more in dinner.  So, this month the older three each got to select one dinner.  I decide when we eat it.  And, they help prepare it.  This month we’re having homemade pizza, fajitas, and chicken pot pie.

Our rules:

  1. You can’t pick the same thing as anyone else.
  2. It has to be something Dad wants to eat (ie, not chicken nuggets).

That’s it.  Pretty simple.  I’m sure pizza will be chosen again next month, but we’ll see what sort of branching out we can encourage.

Grocery Spending

Well, I really blew the grocery plan this month.  But, I’m not too upset about it.  My second trip to BJs should really have been in the first week of November, but scheduling meant I had to go just before Halloween.  And, I bought a beef primal which is expensive, but will last a few months broken down.  All in all we ate very well and still for under $200 per person.

  • October TOTAL: $1,183.11
    • Stop & Shop: $246.79
    • BJs: $517.39
    • Other: $418.93
      • Local: $250.42
      • Wegman’s: $44.44
      • Star Market: $55.77
      • Trader Joe’s: $39.42
      • Target: $28.88

Here’s my most recent trip to the farm stand.  Unfortunately we’re moving out of season (we’re not big winter squash eaters) so all we got was green beans, cilantro, scallions, and lettuce.

Food Plan & a New Store

27 Monday Oct 2014

Wegman’s opened here over the weekend.  There was a lot of hoopla, including signs warning of dire traffic.  I had to go by in the afternoon and I can say there was no dire traffic then.  With all that, the excitement of my friends who’ve shopped at one before, and the coupon booklet of free stuff they mailed, I have to try it.  So, since Stop & Shop has little I want this week I’m going to use up what I already have and buy the minimum I need at Wegman’s to use their coupons and check it out.

Here’s the plan for this week.

Saturday:
Smoked beef roast
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Salad

Sunday:
Beef & broccoli stir fry

Monday:
Spaghetti with ricotta, lemon, & arugula
Potato bread

Tuesday:
Take-out pizza

Wednesday:
Roast chicken
Potato bread
Green beans
Salad

Thursday:
London broil
Carrots
Popovers

Friday:
Kids: poached eggs
Adults: homemade pizza

I finished up my four weeks of $50 purchases at Stop & Shop this week.  I admit, the first three weeks I was higher than necessary; restocking, I imagine.  But, it went lower each week.  This week I got to $42 with what I actually needed.  I needed to get to $56 to use all my coupons so I stocked up on bread, which was on sale.  I ended up with the following for $42.44 after coupons.
