tag sale

Fall is in full swing.  Along with school for us that means mostly soccer, swimming lessons, and some baseball.  Since both baseball and soccer practices occur in the 5:00-8:00 weekday evening window, it also brings lots of split dinners.  This coming week is particularly bad as we have something that will split us up every night.  Two weeks ago was more normal with only three evenings of activities.

  • All the boys had picture day.  It’s nice to get that out of the way early.  Thankfully it wasn’t so hot this year.  Sending them in pants just looks so much nicer than shorts.
  • Four kids had swimming lessons.
  • One child went to gymnastics.
  • Our oldest had three baseball practices and one baseball scrimmage.
  • Between four kids we had five soccer practices and four soccer games.  One soccer practice conflicts with a baseball practice so we miss that one unless it rains.  That soccer practice is on turf so it is only canceled for lightening (which we did have one week).
  • One kid went to one play date.
  • I took the Kindergartner to a birthday party.  I’m not sure who thought these kids would actually be able to paint that tree, but the whole thing went remarkably smoothly.

The last week of September was more challenging as 5th grade math night took our Tuesday and Elementary Back to School night took Thursday.  I was at tag sale setup Friday night.  We had no weekday dinners together.

  • Four kids had swimming lessons.
  • One child went to gymnastics.
  • Our oldest had two baseball practices.  We opted for soccer this week so on the baseball practice/soccer practice day we went to soccer and on the baseball scrimmage/soccer game day we also went to soccer.
  • Between four kids we had six soccer practices and four soccer games.
  • The kids played with our neighbors.

The twin’s group tag sale was this past weekend; that occupied much of my time over the past two weeks.  I had more volume and more dollars tagged than any previous sale and much of it sold.  This week I’ll be sorting through what I got back to see if it gets saved for the next one or donated now.  Unlike previous sales there were no donation options onsite so everything that didn’t sell came home.

Here’s the first layer of the minivan packed.

And here we are all filled up and ready to go!

Since I know someone will ask – I took out all the seats except the one with a car seat installed.  Yes, taking it out would have made packing easier.  But, I’m pretty good at car tetris and removing/reinstalling a car seat is a lot more effort than removing/reinstalling backless boosters.  Plus, I needed that seat closer in time both before and after the sale.  I still haven’t put all the other seats back in!

Apparently the front seat is bad luck as most of what you can see there – tub, bouncy seat, house, and ride-on – came back.  The swing did sell.  The only other big things I see in these pictures that didn’t sell are the smallest stroller (top in halfway picture), toddler chairs (there are actually two in there), Power Wheels, gate, and learning table.  I was very happy that so many large items sold as they are harder to store.

These sales happen twice a year though, largely because of baseball and soccer, I don’t always participate.

About Twin Gifting

22 Thursday Dec 2016

≈ Comments Off on About Twin Gifting

This may come across as more of a complaint than I intend.  Obviously anytime someone gives a gift they should be thanked and the gift enjoyed.  But, having had twins now for almost 10 years, there are a few gifting mistakes that folks without twins tend to make consistently and that are fairly universally viewed negatively by twins and twin parents.

So, in reverse order, here are four twin gifting fails.

4.  Failing to adhere to the same vs different established toy protocol.  This one is tough because each family’s rules are different.  But, families with twins, especially same gender twins around preschool age, have a preference here.  Either their twins are used to having their own version of every toy so they don’t fight over them.  Or, they’re used to having two similar toys that likely end up shared so there’s more variety.

As they get older, if you would like to give two gifts, two similar games is better than two copies of the same one.

img_5700

Or, as their interests develop, two similar valued items targeted at the interests of each child.

3. Wrapping two different valued toys together on the assumption they will share both.  Twin children automatically assume one toy is for each child, even if they will be shared eventually.  They know when one is of substantially higher value than the other so the one who unwraps the lesser item is always let down.  Don’t add a small item just so there are two things.  One shared present is fine, so long as it is a shareable item like a game, tent, large container of blocks, or such.

2. Which brings us to the next issue.  LEGOs are not shareable toys.  Please do not buy one large LEGO set to share; two smaller ones will be much more appreciated.  Yes, the big sets are expensive and more eye popping for kids.  But, twins do not want to work together, alternating pieces on a LEGO set even if they can be convinced to do LEGO at the same time.  I have yet to run across a LEGO set where sections are designed to be built in parallel, though that would be an interesting idea for LEGO to explore with the really large sets.

1. Finally, please do not buy two items and wrap them in one piece of paper with both names.  I’ve seen this with similar and identical items.  It’s a bad look, and the kids know.  Twins are individuals and would like to be treated as such.  You went to the trouble of purchasing two gifts.  The least you could do is wrap them separately with their own names.  Pick one for each child (they will automatically switch if they want).  Unwrapping the gift is at least half the fun.

Moving -> Get a POD

PODS

No, PODS isn’t paying me anything to write this.  Regardless, we found the POD to be a critical part of our moving process.  It doesn’t need to be an actual POD, many companies offer storage boxes under different names.

But, the first thing to realize when you are going to sell your house or condo is that you need to clear it out.  Space, everyone wants to see space.  They want to see how the space might be used too, but they do not want to feel cramped.  So, in February we brought in a POD (with a mild winter this was manageable).

First to go was anything seasonal that would not be needed until next Fall – Christmas decorations, Halloween, and a lot of winter stuff.  The next category for us was kid stuff that was between kids – cribs (yes, we have two from the twins), bikes, strollers, clothes, and lots of large plastic stuff.  Third, we packed up most of our books (and we have a lot).  Books are time consuming to pack well and heavy so they go in small boxes that require many trips, i.e. expensive for movers to deal with.  They also generally go on bookshelves that go up towards the ceiling making the room look smaller.  So, into the POD went many boxes of books and most of our bookshelves.  Many of our bookshelves fold flat, and I found the paper pads to be very useful for wrapping them up.  I actually found these pads more useful than I had expected.  I highly recommend them if you’re packing things yourself.

Finally, we filled up the rest of the POD with whatever else we thought we could part with.  This included some of the pictures from the walls, some kitchen gear, and some tools/shelving from the garage.  This has left us with a house that looks less cluttered for potential buyers and is easier to keep super clean as there is just less stuff to get strewn about.  I highly recommend one.  (Admittedly we haven’t gotten our POD back; its at their storage facility until we get to the new house.  I reserve the right to change my opinion of them should things come back in less than optimal condition.)

Indoor Things to do with a Toddler & Infant Twins

There are many phases one goes through with a child, let alone twins.  So, how do you get through that first year when the twins are small and you have a toddler running around?

First, while the babies are still in their bucket seats, they are very portable.  Learn to carry both buckets at once; people will open doors for you.  This is important because (as long as you have reasonably cooperative babies) it extends the window when you can do things with your older one that you did before.  Once the twins are too big for the buckets, and before they’re good walkers/listeners, you will be much more limited in your excursions.

Twins in car seats

The mall play areas are great  because kids are expected and they’re fairly open so you can have better access to both your stroller and the kids – great in particular when you need to feed the babies, but keep the toddler entertained.  Different ones are busy at different times so learn the schedules of those near you. Basic grocery shopping is another good activity; it will take longer with everyone in tow anyway. Similar to the mall, there is movement and things to see.  You don’t have to go to your “home” library, you can also explore different libraries for the play areas.

Beyond that, think outside the box. I took mine to HMart once. We didn’t buy anything, we just looked at all the different/interesting foods. I’ve had mine at the skating rink – bleachers are endlessly fun for 2/3y climbing (though no good for early walkers). Another activity mine liked when they were small was shoveling. I bundled up the twins and put them in the stroller (in the edge of the garage to keep them out of the weather more, though this isn’t critical) and they watched my 2y and I shovel.

Lowe’s/Home Depot is great too. Your toddler can sit on all the lawn tractors. There’s lots to look at, big wide aisles, NASCAR carts, a forklift doing something, and you don’t actually have to buy anything.  You will, however, plan all those project you can’t do now but will need/want as three children get bigger.

As I said at the beginning, when the twins outgrow the bucket but still require a stroller/being carried, there are definite limitations.  So, even though it can be tough to get out of the house try to pack in what you can early so you’re not tired of home when it just becomes much easier to stay there.

What to Buy for Twins after a Singleton

≈ Comments Off on What to Buy for Twins after a Singleton

It’s very different having twins after a singleton, vs having twins first.  You have a toddler to deal with, which necessitates different activities.  More relevant to this discussion, though, is that you already have some things and you’ve developed preferences for what you actually use.

Here goes on the double question (after a singleton). Some of this will depend on your preferences.

I need 2 of: car seat, crib, pack n play, high chair, bouncy seat.  Most of these are safety issues so they can’t really be debated.  I think most people would like a second bouncy seat, vs other locations for infants, but there is some personal preference here.

Need more of, but not double: bibs, crib sheets (I went from 4 total to 6 total), bottles (personally I like to only have to wash once per day, but that’s up to you)

Nice to have with twins that I didn’t have with one: swing (one is enough as your child might not like it anyway but they’re great when there’s one adult and they’re both crying), two bumbos.  Not everybody likes the bumbos, but I found them invaluable for storytime with three.  I could set them up in front of me like you see at library storytime vs trying to cram them all on my lap.  That never worked very well.

Things you likely have that you don’t need more of: activity mat, exersaucer/jumper, changing pad covers (assuming you have more than 2 already), carrier so you can carry one and put the other in the stroller/shopping cart/etc (unless both adults are willing to carry).

You’ll also need a double stroller, or triple if your kids are too close together.  I’d vote for the double if at all possible.  If necessary you can put one twin and the older one in the stroller and carry the twin.  The older one will learn to walk soon enough and triple strollers are even more expensive and bulky than doubles.

My Practical Advice on Preparing for Twins

21 Thursday May 2015

≈ Comments Off on My Practical Advice on Preparing for Twins

My oldest turned two right when our twins were born. My super practical recommendation is to think about where you go by yourself and how you will navigate those places with three kids. Fundamentally, there will be places that go off your list until the twins can walk.

It is key to determine who does, and does not have automatic doors. You’ll be amazed at all the doors that are a complete pain in the ass with a double stroller that weren’t so bad with a single. You basically have to wait for someone rather than wiggle yourself and the stroller through a manual door.

Second, think about places that your oldest likes that you can manage with two buckets and no stroller. Yes, you get even more stares than with a double stroller! But, I found it doable to carry one bucket in each hand pretty much until they outgrew them; you’re actually better balanced than with one. So, places like McDonald’s where you can park right near a door and then just plunk everyone down at a table make for good outings. The grocery store is also manageable if you can put your oldest in the plastic car, one bucket on top, and the second baby in a bucket in the basket or a carrier. My oldest liked being in charge of the canned goods and other stuff he could stash in the car without worry.

Finally, get to know the drivethroughs. I’m not talking about fast food here, but banks and other errands that don’t require getting the kids out of the car. It helps to have a stash of these types of errands in the car for when they all fall asleep. I kept a crossword or such for myself also in case I ended up just parked someplace.

The oldest may or may not be helpful with the twins.  The twins will learn to walk at some point.  At some later point they will learn to walk together; this is your big goal and will really enable you to go places you’ve left off your list for years.

Sesame Place Preview

Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Sesame Place

Well, I’m gearing up for summer!  Planning is underway for our summer trip which looks to be a short one to eastern Pennsylvania.  As such (and because we intend to visit again), I thought I’d recap our previous two trips to Sesame Place.  This will remind me of what to expect and hopefully interest/educate.

We first took our older three boys Sesame Place (outside Philadelphia) when they were not quite 2 (x2) and not quite 4.  The main logic behind this timing kids under 2 are free, and we had two such candidates!  The second time we went was after our fourth child turned two as going before his second birthday really wasn’t feasible.  I hadn’t been since I was single digits so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.

Sesame Place has water rides and dry rides. Two days is really the right amount of time. (Conveniently a base ticket option is a free second day).  We drove down the night before and back at the end of the second day so it was 2 nights/2 days. There was a lot more water than I remember.  That gave us one wet day and one dry day; if you are driving direct do the wet day first.   They don’t have changing rooms (unless you pay for a cabana). The coed pavilions are fine for kids to change, but not really for adults so if you want to change out of wet stuff you end up in the bathroom.  It would have been better to do the water stuff on the first day and plan to stay dry the second. Of course, if you’re staying another night in a hotel it doesn’t matter. And, it wasn’t that big a deal, just one thing to deal with. We also didn’t do naps those days; we were at the park until roughly 4 each day.

042

While not technically a ride, the cargo nets are a favorite for my guys (you can see two of them up there).

My oldest never got into the character thing, but the younger ones did and when they were toddlers really enjoyed seeing the characters. The park is generally manageable with twins/strollers. The only issue we found is that a lot of the rides required one adult per kid. (From rides to dining, the entire place is really set up for families with 2 adults and 2 children.) We managed to work around this the first time by keeping the twins on the smaller rides where they could go together with an adult, but I imagine this could be an issue for somewhat older kids. So, there were a few rides the little ones couldn’t go on, but they didn’t notice because they were so excited by what they could do.  By the time we went back, the twins were plenty big to go on their own so we were back to a 1/1 ratio with the youngest (where it mattered)!

The Joys of Spring

01 Friday May 2015

Tomorrow is Little League Opening Day.  A much bigger to-do is made of this than it really needs with the parade, speeches, and such.  We do tend to skip those.  But, what it really means is that my six weeks of spring sports schedule hell (with a small respite on Memorial Day weekend) is beginning.  There will be very few family dinners and Saturdays the adults will be split to handle the two sets of activities.  Starting tomorrow most weeks we will have:

Monday evening – soccer practice for oldest; baseball game for twins (thankfully they’re on the same team); unfortunately these are at the same time, but not the same place so I’ll have to sort out how everyone is getting where they need to be

Tuesday evening – meeting for Mom (different each week, but somehow, thankfully, all on Tuesday which doesn’t have another conflict)

Wednesday evening – baseball game for oldest

Thursday evening – soccer practice for oldest

Saturday (needs a list) – soccer & baseball games x three kids

Sunday – baseball practice for oldest

Amazingly, we have very few conflicts.  We were anticipating having to make some tough decisions with the increased time commitments required of 3rd grade sports.

Frugal Twin Tips

29 Wednesday Apr 2015

Everyone’s budget and definition of frugal is different, but I’ll try to throw out a few thoughts.

I buy specific brands for a few things:
Gap/Gymboree/Lands End for pants because of fit/wear
Carters for pajamas because of fit
new brand names for shoes/boots (Stride Rite, New Balance, etc.) for fit/wear

That being said, I know when the clothing brands I buy are on their best sales of the year and buy what I need then, even if its off season. I also don’t buy shoes every 3 months, I don’t even go in to get them fitted until I think they need new ones. This means we do usually skip a size (or 2). But, I’ve found the brand names shoes do wear better than the cheap stuff.

Through size 5T, I shop a lot at Target. I’ve been very happy with their Circo brand for shirts, shorts (not pants), swimwear, and snow gear.  Once they hit kindergarten/size XS its a different story and I go elsewhere.

I don’t shop Craigslist/ebay/etc and I barely shop consignment sales/stores.  The exception is Gap chinos which one of mine likes to wear everyday and which are often readily available in excellent condition at consignment sales if I happen to be there.

Finally, I would say think about what you need. And try things on every season to confirm that it really does need to be replaced vs the size on the tag. We do very well on 4-6 outfits per child. It does mean doing laundry more often, but its still the same number of loads. And, they have favorites. Even though I can, and do, use hand-me-downs I prefer to have one child use up the item so the next gets the new/preferred version.

Next Man Up

I spent some of yesterday sorting and packing my outgrown pile. My youngest is moving to the next clothing size so I needed to get out shorts and long pants for him.  I took the opportunity while I was repacking to put everything else that’s been set aside since someone needed a new clothing size away.  A few items went to the baby boxes (outgrown by everyone), but most went into the appropriate bin for the next boy in line.

In the process I discovered I have a lot of NWT Carter’s pjs that I know I bought on sale.  I find some seasons I like a lot of their designs, but other times I really don’t like any.  I only have one child left to wear them, and I may have more than he needs.  I think I need to remember to tone down the post-twin replacement purchases to singleton levels.
