Teachers Have Homes Too

As we were leaving preschool last week my preschooler says, “My teacher’s driving away!”  “Yes.  She’s going home”, I said.  “But teachers don’t have homes!”

It’s still a wonder what goes on in their heads, even by the nth child.  He thought they just slept in the building and I think he’s still a bit perturbed that they might have a kitchen/yard/etc that’s not at school.  I’m told this is quite a common misconception, but its still amazing to see/hear things for the first time.

Food Plan & Grocery Bill

Tags

Well, I really blew the grocery plan this month.  But, I’m not too upset about it.  My second trip to BJs should really have been in the first week of November, but scheduling meant I had to go just before Halloween.  And, I bought a beef primal which is expensive, but will last a few months broken down.  All in all we ate very well and still for under $200 per person.

  • October TOTAL: $1,183.11
    • Stop & Shop: $246.79
    • BJs: $517.39
    • Other: $418.93
      • Local: $250.42
      • Wegman’s: $44.44
      • Star Market: $55.77
      • Trader Joe’s: $39.42
      • Target: $28.88

Here’s my most recent trip to the farm stand.  Unfortunately we’re moving out of season (we’re not big winter squash eaters) so all we got was green beans, cilantro, scallions, and lettuce.

Halloween Accessories

I’m not one who goes all out for Halloween.  But, I do think there are a few things all kids want – a costume, candy, and something to put their loot in.  Mine also care that we do something to decorate our house.  Since I’m not big on decorating in general (there is no Pinterest here), we stick to pumpkins and a few decorations we’ve bought (and kept) over the years.

I’ll talk more about costumes (with pictures) next week.  But today I thought I’d touch briefly on the other Halloween elements.  Namely, I thank Target for their orange pumpkin buckets.  They have other options/colors, but orange pumpkins are what my kids want and they are durable enough that I can keep them year to year (which I do) while cheap enough that I can replace them as needed.  And, the best part is that they never seem to change so as we’ve added more kids/pumpkins there’s little “mine” when they emerge from the closet since they all look the same.  I’m also glad the dollar store has $1 packs of glow sticks/bracelets/necklaces/etc.  At that price I can get one for each kid for when they stray from the flashlight.  And, they stop working promptly that night so there’s no need to save them.

Next year I do need to add a charm or such to each pumpkin so we can keep track of whose candy is whose.  I used to just keep them lined up at their spot on the table.  Amazingly it wasn’t touched.  But, my preschooler has figured out how to eat candy when nobody’s watching so I need a new system.  This year I put a note in each one, but that’s a little hard to deal with.

Pumpkin Carving

Considering we’ve had two Halloween storms in recent years (with the resulting school cancellations), we’ve had just incredible weather this week.  This gave us a great opportunity to get out and carve our pumpkins.

IMG_2633 IMG_2635 IMG_2637

This was the first year I wasn’t required to do the whole thing.  I cut the top and did most of the scraping.  But, I got some scraping help, and lots of guts removal help.  Plus, two carved their own pumpkins.  The third I had to carve, but he drew the design.

(I think they look oddly similar.)

It’s Not Often We Have a New Head to Toe Outfit

The fifth boy does get a lot of hand me downs.  But, here is an outfit that’s all his.  (By kid 5, not all the clothes are salvageable.  He was short pants and fun shirts.)  The shoes are fairly new, but the shirt and pants had the tags off this morning.  How?  Well, all my kids get new everyday shoes.  The pants were an add-on to an order for the older ones.  They were on sale and equaled the shipping that I would have otherwise had to pay.  Better to have new pants.  The shirt was more of a splurge as I went to Old Navy to pick up shirts for my older one, saw this, and bought it.  All were on sale, but I did buy three shirts instead of two.

BJs Update (Again)

As discussed previously (see post from Sept 13, 2014), it became clear that I wasn’t going to succeed right now going to BJs only once a month.  So, its been three weeks and I went back again yesterday.  This time I thought I’d include a picture of what I bought along with an update on how we did using up what we bought the previous two times.  Note I left the milk out of the picture, as 12 gallons would have overwhelmed it.

IMG_2628

Those of you with sharp eyes will notice that I bought a bunch of pre-sliced apples.  While I would normally buy whole apples (and my kids prefer to eat them that way), we’re providing soccer snacks soon.  I’ve learned over the years that I prefer to buy separate packages vs spending my time cutting them up only to throw out a bunch of apples everyone’s handled at the end.  This way each kid gets clean apples (soccer hands can be dirty) and I get useable leftovers if any don’t get eaten.

Previous BJs purchases in Sept & Oct (covers 6 weeks):
Entirely gone:
10 gallons 1% milk
10 gallons whole milk
6 lbs frozen shrimp
3 lbs bacon
1 package (4) green peppers
3 lbs (6) sweet potatoes
1 package (2 loaves) whole wheat bread
1 package (16) hot dog buns
3 cartons of chicken broth
3 flats (96 cans) Coke

In process (with amount remaining):
5 packages (110) Babybel cheeses – part of 1 package
4 lbs butter – 3 lbs
6 dozen XL eggs – 3 dozen
2 packages (really 6 since they come in 3pks) chicken cutlets – 4 packs
8 lbs boneless/skinless chicken thighs – 1/3
5 lbs thin sliced chicken – half
4 lbs ground turkey – 1/3
4.5 lbs ground beef – 2/3
10 lbs carrots – roughly 2 pounds
2 lbs (6) lemons – half
2 cases (16 cans) mandarin oranges – part of 1 case
1 package (36) flour tortillas – a few
1 container chili powder – this was going to last a while
1 container brown gravy mix – this was going to last a while too
2 bottles BBQ sauce – 1 bottle
1 package of 2 salsa/1 queso – one jar of salsa
2 containers of peanut butter – 1 container
2 bottles grape juice – 1 bottle
2 flats (48 cans) pineapple juice – roughly half a flat

Not yet started (maybe should have delayed purchase):
3 lbs Kosher salt
3 lbs honey
72 oz chocolate chips -> we were out and the coupon was expiring
36 Hershey bars -> for Halloween but purchased with expiring coupon

Food Plan & a New Store

Wegman’s opened here over the weekend.  There was a lot of hoopla, including signs warning of dire traffic.  I had to go by in the afternoon and I can say there was no dire traffic then.  With all that, the excitement of my friends who’ve shopped at one before, and the coupon booklet of free stuff they mailed, I have to try it.  So, since Stop & Shop has little I want this week I’m going to use up what I already have and buy the minimum I need at Wegman’s to use their coupons and check it out.

Here’s the plan for this week.

Saturday:
Smoked beef roast
Mashed potatoes
Carrots
Salad

Sunday:
Beef & broccoli stir fry

Monday:
Spaghetti with ricotta, lemon, & arugula
Potato bread

Tuesday:
Take-out pizza

Wednesday:
Roast chicken
Potato bread
Green beans
Salad

Thursday:
London broil
Carrots
Popovers

Friday:
Kids: poached eggs
Adults: homemade pizza

Apple Turnovers Give us a Puff Pastry Review

There was some leftover apple pie filling in the freezer so I decided to try making apple turnovers.  I make apple pie with a precooked filling; it comes out so much better than raw apples.  Plus, after apple picking you can make a bunch of fillings and freeze them.  Then thaw, dump in (homemade) pie crust, and bake.

I’ve never worked with puff pastry before so I bought the cheapest option – store brand.  They were great and quickly disappeared.  But, one batch didn’t use all the filling so I went back for some more.  This time Pepperidge Farm was on sale cheaper than the store brand so I bought it.  I liked the store brand better.   Pepperidge Farm had a lot of extra flour, which did make unfolding easier, but it also made crimping harder.  It was also much stiffer so the dough cracked when it folded over.  It was flakier when baked, but maybe overly so.  I took some pictures though, because they’re still pretty good!

Bacon Review

I tried buying bacon at BJs last month – store brand: Wellsley Farms Naturally Hickory Smoked Thick Cut Bacon.  It turns out we didn’t like it much.  We prefer thick cut bacon, which this is, but it tastes too much like ham and not enough like bacon.  So, next BJs trip I’ll see if there’s another thick cut option, or I’m going back to Oscar Mayer.

PS: Yes, I cook my bacon in bulk in the oven.

Halloween Hay Ride

We’ve taken our annual Halloween hay ride.  The boys were very excited about this and its manageable.  Also, despite the name the one we go to is really geared for the preschool and early elementary set – not very scary.  The afternoon we went there was about a 20 min wait.  The weather was gorgeous.  No strollers so I had to hold the youngest; he got heavy.  The ride itself was a little longer than the line.  I’m always a bit worried someone will fall off, but we haven’t lost anyone yet.  Afterwards, we bought enough pumpkins to cover the free ride.

Our pumpkin never turned orange.  So, I’m adding it to our purchased pumpkins for some variety.  Plus, frost is coming and the garden needs to be cleared out so we can actually mow the grass it took over before winter.
