Yes, I have a Minivan

08 Friday May 2015

I never really wanted one.  And, now having one for four years, I’m still not convinced.  But, I understand why we have it; I just might not buy another one.

Our minivan of choice is a Honda Odyssey.  This was, in two ways, the lesser of the evils.  First, I determined that we needed a minivan rather than an SUV.  This was primarily because we had three children who could not buckle their own seatbelt and I did not relish the idea of climbing into the back of an SUV multiple times per day.  That being said, I definitely prefer the look and cargo configuration of an SUV.  Second, I drove a few minivans and determined that the Odyssey was the least offensive.

Pros:

  • It has 8 seats so we can take people with us.  It’s nice not to have to take 2 cars so often.
  • It has 5 LATCH points.  I really liked that there were two at the sides of the 3rd vs a single more centered one.  This means we can have two car seats and a 3rd person sitting, at least for short distances.  In my mind at the time, the 3rd LATCH in the 2nd row was a bonus that gave us extra flexibility for seating, though now we have three across in that row.  We’ve always used the center seat with one or two of the sides, vs maintaining an aisle.
  • I LOVE the backup camera, especially how it enables me to parallel park fast even on a curve.
  • I do like sliding doors.
  • I like Bluetooth.

Cons:

  • It is a family car, vs anything fun.
  • My #1 pet peeve of this minivan is the locking mechanisms.  There are a couple of configurations, but none fix the fact that when you open the slider on the passenger side, it only unlocks the passenger door.  Why on earth does it not unlock the driver’s door?  Is someone really going to jump in my vehicle?  I still have the keys and I’m right there because the remote doesn’t work from that far away.  I don’t think it’s getting hot wired that fast.
  • Similarly, why is there a lock on the fuel cap?  I haven’t seen that in years.  I have no concerns with someone stealing fuel.
  • Finally, how is it that Lexus invented a method of accessing the 3rd row with a car seat installed and not Honda?  I’ve never HAD to put a LATCHed seat in the captain’s chair that I need to fold/slide to access the third row, but I’d appreciate the flexibility to do so.
  • The storage capacity is only so-so.  I realize by cubic feet it is comparable to an SUV.  But, I like horizontal rather than vertical storage.  Yes, we fit everything we needed in the back for our big road trip last summer, including three sets of golf clubs.  If what you have can stack/be stacked on it works.  But, when I buy milk at BJs (and we know I buy alot), I can’t stack the rest of the items on top of them.  And, the milk really needs to be on the bottom since its a flat surface.

All in all, I’d choose the minivan again given our situation.  I’m just not sure I’ll get another one when this one needs to be replaced.

Ball Frozen Herb Starters

I bought these about a month ago in an attempt to waste fewer fresh herbs.  I don’t own ice cube trays so those were not an option.

First, the good.  They are easy to fill, and it is easy to remove the cubes from the green base once they’re frozen.  The recommendation is to remove them to a Ziploc bag after freezing, which I did.  They stayed separate in the freezer and went into my next recipe just fine.  Plus, with two trays per box there’s plenty of capacity to freeze the remainder of a grocery store bunch at once.

But … The lids are impossible to get off – at least that is my experience thus far.  I filled my trays and snapped them on no problem.  But, once frozen the lids have no give.  I had to use a screwdriver to pry them off (I seriously contemplated smashing them with a hammer or just throwing them away it was so frustrating).  In the process I drew blood from my hand as the screwdriver slipped multiple times. (Photo is from the next day.)

What’s worse is that I wrote to Ball with my experiences two weeks ago and … radio silence.  I admit it is possible I did something wrong.  Namely, I am going to try using them again but with less fluid so there might be some give at the top.  But, I read and followed all of the instructions that came with them, had issues, and got no response from customer service.  That is just wrong.

Babyproofing

You probably figured this was a done deal what with 4 older kids including twins, who team up to get into everything (or so they say).  But, no.  Our little guy has found his way into many places our older ones never thought to go.

So, we bought a second gate.  Thankfully we were able to find one similar to our discontinued model used.  This helps as the older ones all know how to work the mechanism and we want them to be able to get in and out.

We also had to remove all the stools.  This one is a climber, at least to reach and grope the tables and counters.  Then we removed small chairs and a few other items he’d identified as climbing aids.  Thus far none of these have been toys.

Next, we put drawer locks on drawers the older ones never bothered with.  Since those came in a multi-pack when we bought them way back when, we didn’t need to buy these.  But, he’s defeated them and/or decided he can reach in the remaining slot and pull things out.

It is better though, and maybe the novelty will wear off.

Finally, we added a lock to the sliding closet door in their room as rehanging every shirt in there twice a day was taking its toll.  Unlike the drawer locks this has been a tremendous success and one of my projects for next week will be to put everything back in that closet since I’m not pretty convinced he’s locked out AND our older ones can get in to access their stuff.

I wonder what he’ll get to next.

The BatBot

I wasn’t sure about this.  It got a lot of press to the run up to Christmas.  I saw one in October and thought maybe.  I saw one just after Thanksgiving, but figured it had been played with 100 times in the store so I should buy it online.  Trouble was, by that point, online was sold out and they were going for 4 times the regular price on Ebay/Amazon Marketplace/etc.  Of course, by this time I was sure it was what I wanted.  After much looking, I finally found one at the Fisher Price Store.  And, I’m glad I spent the time because it has been played with a lot so far.

Apple Turnovers Give us a Puff Pastry Review

There was some leftover apple pie filling in the freezer so I decided to try making apple turnovers.  I make apple pie with a precooked filling; it comes out so much better than raw apples.  Plus, after apple picking you can make a bunch of fillings and freeze them.  Then thaw, dump in (homemade) pie crust, and bake.

I’ve never worked with puff pastry before so I bought the cheapest option – store brand.  They were great and quickly disappeared.  But, one batch didn’t use all the filling so I went back for some more.  This time Pepperidge Farm was on sale cheaper than the store brand so I bought it.  I liked the store brand better.   Pepperidge Farm had a lot of extra flour, which did make unfolding easier, but it also made crimping harder.  It was also much stiffer so the dough cracked when it folded over.  It was flakier when baked, but maybe overly so.  I took some pictures though, because they’re still pretty good!

Bacon Review

I tried buying bacon at BJs last month – store brand: Wellsley Farms Naturally Hickory Smoked Thick Cut Bacon.  It turns out we didn’t like it much.  We prefer thick cut bacon, which this is, but it tastes too much like ham and not enough like bacon.  So, next BJs trip I’ll see if there’s another thick cut option, or I’m going back to Oscar Mayer.

PS: Yes, I cook my bacon in bulk in the oven.

Unsolicited Product Review – Skunkies

Skunkies

And, I have to put in an unsolicited product plug.  We checked the cleat supply a month ago and discovered a solitary, very stinky pair that didn’t fit anyone.  I wasn’t sure if I should throw it out right then since I have four more who will pass through that size.  But the smell!  Well, when I put the cleats back in the basement, I put a set of Skunkies in them. Never used them before, but I had them as a BBB add-on purchase to make it to a coupon amount. Amazingly when I pulled them out with every intention of adding them to the other pairs hitting the trash they had no smell at all. So, I put them back and will check again when one of mine actually needs that size. I don’t know if they would really work for daily use, but apparently they’re great for long-term storage.

Is a Free Stroller Any Good?

19 Friday Sep 2014

≈ Comments Off on Is a Free Stroller Any Good?

The short answer is yes.  The Babies R Us Lightweight Umbrella Stroller is good at what it does.  It’s $19.99 normally, but they regularly have buy $X worth of stuff to get the stroller free.  Last I remember it was $50, which is eminently doable if you’re still dealing with baby items.  But, you can buy anything in the store so presents for older kids work too in a combo Toys R Us/Babies R Us store.

IMG_3189

It has no storage, which is a downer.  And, I don’t care for the sunshade (but it removes easily so just toss it).  But, even with my large kids it can be steered with one hand and it fold/unfolds very easily.  Since it takes up no space in my trunk it lives there for all the times I go in and out but need/want the baby to stay sitting.  Even if you have a fancier stroller, I definitely recommend picking up this freebie!

Since soccer season is hear I have to put in a plug for the DryGuy Wide Body Boot and Glove Dryer (note, that I get no money for this I just really like it).

IMG_3186

I tried baths, sprays, powders (for both shoes and feet) to no avail. A boot dryer is the
solution. I use mine all the time (actually got a second because I like it so much and have many shoes!). Cleats, sneakers, boots, winter gloves, etc. live on it. I will say that while the ad says one cycle will dry the shoes/gloves I do find I need to run it twice in winter when there’s snow involved. But, other than that it works like a charm and the odors are gone.
