CSA Week #8, 2015

Tags

The CSA box is finally starting to take on more color.

The good:  swiss chard (I have a great fish recipe for this), boston lettuce, pickling cucumber (we’ll just eat them), red onions, corn, tomatoes

The ok: zucchini (not anyone’s favorites, but we’ll eat them), basil & scallion (I can use these, but not in the quantity given

The waste/donate: beets, chioggia beets, kholrabi, kale

I’ll go with the “good” plus the basil.  This is the best week yet, though it begins to highlight my issue with the CSA.  I have no interest in the “waste/donate” category, but I could use way more corn than comes in the box, just to have one meal let alone two which we could easily do in a week.  So, its not just the mix of produce, its the quantities that don’t work so well for us.

Last Two Week’s Accomplishments – Summer Activities

We had some biggies this week!

  • Toilet trained #4!
  • Got the twins going on bikes without training wheels!
  • Took 3 kids mini golfing.
  • Took 2 kids to see Jurassic World.
  • Tried golf with 5 kids; 2 didn’t succeed, but we’ll try again when they’re older.
  • Sorted through another round of paperwork from the past school year.  (I’m about halfway through.)

Grocery Update & CSA Week 7, 2015

Well, we went away for another short trip, but now will be back for the duration of the summer.

It’s been hectic lately and with the heat I haven’t wanted to take the time after getting home to lay out all the groceries.  Better to get them in the fridge.  I need to get back to the photos.  But, I did take a few photos of some of the more interesting items this week.

Mustard was $0.50 each after sales & coupons.  I bought one ketchup – we’ll use it, one had to buy 4 total items to get the best sale price, and I needed one more coupon to have three for the mustards.

I also took a photo of my produce purchases for the week.  There was one more plum & one more banana, but they got eaten before the photo.  Obviously the bananas aren’t local.  Neither are the tomatoes.  But, the blueberries, peaches, and plums are.  The peaches and plums were tiny, but very tasty.

It’s CSA week 7 and its the first week where I could use everything in the box!

The good:  athena melon, Boston lettuce, corn (though not enough for us), tomatoes, cucumber, swiss chard, wax beans

The ok: romano beans, zucchini, basil & scallions (more than we could ever use of each), carrots (I really can’t tell the difference between local & CA from the grocery store)

I’ll go with the “good” this week.  That’s not to say that there’s anything bad in the ok selection.  But, I’ll need more corn and I’d prefer to add some in season fruits like blueberries or peaches (just coming into season so this will only work if I can find them).

  • The older boys attended a week of either technology or baseball camp
  • Started summer swimming and golf lessons
  • Had two play dates for the younger boys
  • Oldest started his summer baseball team
  • Three boys got their hair cut
  • Cleaned out the garden of spring, ie cold weather, plants
  • Renewed my twin club memberships
  • Did some grocery shopping to restock perishables after the vacation

Grocery (and many others) Update

Well, we’ve been away for a few weeks so sorry for the lack of posting.  On the plus side, I’ve got a bunch of catching up to do as well as some new things to review / write about.

First, here’s the results of my June shopping.

  • June TOTAL: $618.01
    • Stop & Shop: $120.05
    • Wegman’s: $176.96
    • BJs: $165.67
    • Other: $155.33
      • Local: $54.96
      • Star Market: $63.49
      • Trader Joe’s: $25.14
      • Target: $9.95
      • Other: $1.79

Unfortunately I didn’t made it to the farmer’s market as much as I would have liked, largely because it rained that afternoon for two weeks in a row (and its outdoors in a grass/mud field).  Also, while this total looks low we traveled at the end of the month and ate out so I’m sure if that were factored in it would be a very high month.  This is reasonable for the number of days we were home.

Let’s also take a moment to get caught up on the CSA.  I did miss one week with the travel so this is the update for last week – week #5.  It is getting slightly more interesting.

The good:  blueberries, sugar snap peas, red leaf lettuce, baby arugula, baby spinach

The ok: zucchini (not anyone’s favorites, but we’ll eat them), salad onions, green leaf lettuce (two types is too much for one week)

The waste/donate: beets, golden beets, and kale (we have no use for any of these items), radish (too many already)

I’ll go with the “good” plus the zucchini.  All in all not a bad week.

I accept the lettuce now because the lettuce in our garden went nuts while we were gone.  It looks like little trees.  Frankly, its probably getting too hot for it now so I pulled it out in anticipation of other things.

Last Two Week’s Accomplishments – Last Day of School 2015

I know I missed last week so let’s get caught up.

  • Last days occurred for both schools (definitely the biggest item on the list)
  • I got my haircut
  • We had the last soccer & baseball games of the season
  • We attended two post sports season get togethers
  • I attended one end of school year party
  • We attended two birthday parties
  • I did some weeding and got a few new plants into the garden

Grocery Update

I did very little grocery shopping this week, but did get a few good steals (with only store sales & coupons).

The above items were from Stop & Shop.  The honey bear was only $1.49 after stacking store coupons and discounts.  The mustard did even better – $0.21 to me – after coupons and discounts!  I also got two cans of beans for $0.19 which I left in the food pantry bin at the store.

CSA Week 3, 2015

Well, the green produce rolls on.  I feel like we’ve even gone a bit backwards as the good list is really short this week.

The good:  baby spinach and strawberries.

The ok: escarole & summer squash (not anyone’s favorites, but we’ll eat them – though we have a bunch of each already), dill (so much that it would need to be frozen), boston lettuce, arugula

The waste/donate: radish (don’t need three weeks in a row + school project), garlic scapes, kale, beets, Tuscan kale, kohlrabi

I’ll go with the “good” and “ok” categoryies minus the boston lettuce since we have that in our garden.  As I mentioned yesterday, we got a bunch of radishes from school.  We’ve also harvested lettuce and strawberries from our garden this week.  And, I bought some more tomatoes.

Last Day of School

I know the boys are excited, but I am too this year.  It’s been a grueling last two months.  I’m looking forward to a more relaxing summer, mostly not really having to have anyone anyplace specific at a specific time.

The twins brought home some radishes they’ve been growing for science so we can add those to our produce collection.

I also got the standard pile of end of year papers, which I’m happy to say that I mostly dealt with immediately, vs putting in my bin for later sorting.  I feel quite good about that as I don’t think I’ve ever been quite that prompt.  Though, there’s still much of the year’s worth of papers to be sorted so I’m not off the hook.

Tomorrow we’ll all take a breather and then start enjoying the outdoors and general unstructured time.
