Grocery Update

I admit I didn’t do too much grocery shopping last week.  I made a trip to BJs.

I purchased a few items, mostly on sale, at Stop & Shop.

I also made it to the farm stand for local strawberries and a few other, less local items.

I also took two of the boys to the Strawberry Festival this past weekend and tried all sorts of strawberry goodies – chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry shortcake, spinach salad with strawberries, and strawberry smoothies.  There were other options, but those were what we were interested in.

CSA Week 2, 2015

Tags

I remain glad that I did not sign up this year.  Specifically, we’re in the height of strawberry season here and there are not strawberries in the CSA box.  I bought a bunch.

The box itself is still very green.

The good:  english peas, spinach, cucumber, sugar snap peas

The ok: arugula & iceberg lettuce (I already have plenty of lettuce in our garden.), escarole & summer squash (not anyone’s favorites, but we’ll eat them), basil & cilantro (so much that it would need to be frozen)

The waste/donate: radish (don’t need two weeks in a row), garlic scapes, kale

I’ll go with the “good” category plus the summer squash & arugula.  I also purchased tomatoes this week.

We were able to harvest some strawberries from our garden – not too many but enough for two kids lunches.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – June

Soccer & baseball season are done!  I guess it would have been nice if baseball had continued for my oldest a bit because it would have meat that they were still in the playoffs, but the crazy Saturdays are over.

In other news –

  • We attended two birthday parties.
  • I donated my bag of recyclable fabric before the school competition deadline.  Hopefully our school will do well.
  • I got back to some organizing/cleaning out.  My attention can more fully turn back to this now, but it was nice to get some stuff gone last week.
  • We got a fair amount of yard waste cleared out also.  Next yard waste pickup is in two weeks so hopefully we’ll finish the spring cleanup by then.

Grocery Update

Well.  Last week was super uneventful shopping wise.  I made one visit to Wegman’s.

Even it wasn’t super exciting.  The boys have been eating a lot of granola bars lately so you’ve seen them go buy a bunch.  I won’t be at BJs until Tuesday so I grabbed a gallon of milk to tide me over (same price so there’s no real worry).  I did buy two slices of cheesecake just because it looked good (and I was standing around waiting for the rooster to come out of the barn to entertain the 2 year-old).

CSA Week 1, 2015

Well, I’m glad I didn’t sign up for the CSA this year if this week is any indication.  Don’t get me wrong, its a lovely variety, but gets an F for our family because of the large amount of produce we just wouldn’t use.

The good:  blueberries, baby spinach, radish, swiss chard

The ok: green leaf lettuce & romaine lettuce (I already have plenty of lettuce in our garden.), zucchini & summer squash (not anyone’s favorites, but we’ll eat them)

The waste/donate: beets, rhubarb, golden beets, pea tendrils, kale

Per my earlier pledge to select half the items on the list any given week, I’ll go with the “good” category plus the zucchini & summer squash.  I also purchased peaches (slightly out of area, but from the farm stand) and tomatoes this week.  I was hoping local strawberries would be in, but haven’t seen them yet.

On a more positive note, we have more strawberry buds than ever in our garden.  The deer have taken a few – next year I’ll have to put up some netting, but it looks like we’ll still get a good harvest.

I also added corn and a jalapeno pepper to the garden this week.

Grocery Store Has No Power

I had a number of errands to run yesterday during preschool hours.  After making it through the first few with no issues, I arrived at Star Market to discover they (along with a fairly good sized chunk of town) had lost power.  I’m guessing it was within 15 minutes of my arrival because while some perishables had been covered/moved they were still in scramble mode to deal with the rest.  And, according to at least one person, were looking at two hours before the power came back on.

I only needed a small number of items – mostly perishables actually – which they were probably happy I took off their hands.  So, I gathered my things wondering why the store wasn’t actually closed; what was going on at checkout.  To my surprise the registers were working.  I learned that they had a one hour backup each so by dividing up the registers they could stay open for a while.

On the one had I found it very odd that the registers were working and yet there didn’t seem to be a backup for all the freezer/refrigerator cases.  On the other hand, I realize it would be expensive to install generators at every store.  I don’t envy the managers who were making decisions about what to move to the rear deep freezes, which presumably would stay cold longest vs what to hope would be ok for a power outage of unknown duration.  I still remember when we had a week long power outage a few years back seeing the trucks in front of the grocery store to take away the loads and loads of spoiled food and the week or so it took for them to restock.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – A Little Rain

This past month has been bad.  I’d like to say I was productive last week, but I really wasn’t.

We made it through our standard array of 4 baseball games, 2 soccer games, 1 baseball practice, and 2 soccer practices.  We got some desperately needed rain, which isn’t an accomplishment but is nice for the garden.  I added some misc fabric and two socks to my fabric recycling bin.  This will need to be turned in before the deadline next Monday.  I took one child for their annual physical.

Otherwise, I’m getting through the days and attempting to get ahead a bit on shopping for the summer.

Grocery Update

Well, things got a bit crazy last week.  I suppose that’s to be expected.  We’re all rather worn out from sports seasons and longer term the school year.  Sports finish up in the next ten days; school by the end of the month.  Then we move on to summer vacation!

I was at BJs on Tuesday.  This was a small visit by our standards, mostly staples.

Wednesday I went to Wegman’s and Stop & Shop.

On Wednesday I also stopped at Trader Joe’s for three boxes of cereal bars (didn’t take a picture of them).  And, I went to the local produce place.  There I got strawberries, tomatoes, and peaches.  They buy from all over so none of these are actually local yet.  The local produce here now is limited to greens, but strawberries are expected in 1-2 weeks.  Yippee!

3D Art

I suspect this is a dilemma facing all parents.  What to do with the unending supply of papers that come home from school?

IMG_3315

For papers, or flat items, there are endless ideas online.  However, 3D art seems trickier.  For one, its hard to capture it as well in a photo.  Second, its just plain hard to store.  Third, its often hard to display.  So what do you do?

IMG_3309

I have the usual array of pinch pots, painted flower pots, and plates.  But, more recently I’ve started getting 3D cardboard and papermache structures – beyond the usual clay formations.  Some are to large for diaper boxes even.

IMG_3310  IMG_3190

I guess push will come to shove and some will definitely hit the trash.  For others – I’m thinking more durable, but smaller items – I will store them for a bit to see if the boys miss them.  If the papers are any guide they won’t.

It is Cold

Well.  The powers that be have decided that our winter wasn’t bad enough, so they’re giving us an epically cool spring.  Yesterday the high in Boston was 49, a record low high, and more than 20 degrees cooler than average.

I don’t mind cooler than average.  But, having to turn the heat back on in June is a bit much.  That being said, it’s rained for the past three days which has been welcome as May was also epically dry.  This month we’re expecting a slow warm up with many more highs in the 60s, but hopefully a more normal amount of rain.
