Grocery Spending

Well, we were pretty bang on this month even with Christmas!  I also managed to get in some stocking up.  And, as I’ve referenced other weeks, I haven’t kept as closely to not buying on sale because I need to keep some level of stock in the house at present.  (More on that another day.)

  • December TOTAL: $802.12
    • Stop & Shop: $196.45
    • Wegman’s: $168.19
    • BJs: $184.13
    • Other: $253.35
      • Local: $110.78
      • Star Market: $74.43
      • Trader Joe’s: $10.36
      • Target: $36.41
      • Other: $21.37

I didn’t shop too much this week – plenty of leftovers, the boys are all home from school, etc.

Early in the week I did go to Wegman’s.  I don’t think there’s much exciting here.

Late in the week I went to Star Market.  Generally I would prefer to purchase the pizza dough at BJs, but it seems to be a hit or miss item and the last time I went they were out.  So I got some at Star Market even though it is more expensive.  Unfortunately, Star was low on oatmeal so I could only get 2; I was planning for 8 so I’ll have to go back again more quickly than I had wanted.  Since I went late in the day I got a bag of fried chicken and the watermelon for the boys’ dinner.  We’d never had their fried chicken before, but it was well received.

Grocery Update

28 Monday Dec 2015

Christmas week is here.  And, as you can imagine that means lots of grocery shopping.  (Thankfully just about all actual Christmas shopping has been done via the internet and most has even arrived!)

Christmas dinner menu:
Turkey
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Mashed potatoes
Green beans
Butternut squash
Prunes & apples (family recipe)
Traditional stuffing
Pancetta & Chestnut stuffing (we aim to try a new one each year also)
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie
Gingerbread cookies

First I went to Stop & Shop.  Ironically, there is actually nothing here that will be used on Christmas Day.  I got two beef roasts because they are on great sales also this week.  We’ll eat one tonight and the other on Christmas eve.  With so many people, roasts are pretty cost effective for us, despite their significant single item sticker price.  The four jars are beef gravy to go with them (plus extra since its on sale).  The carrots are for tonight also.

IMG_4191

On Tuesday I went to Wegman’s.  There are a few things for Christmas here:  some decorations for the gingerbread cookies plus pancetta, parsley, and celery for the stuffing.  This weeks coupons were for organic produce (discounted carrots) and bakery (free chocolate croissant in bag).  The other items are to get us through the week (milk) and/or to the next time I make it to Wegman’s.  Specifically, I bought a bunch of granola bars because I don’t anticipate going again for a few weeks.

IMG_4193

I picked up the turkey on Wednesday.  The thyme is also for Christmas Day.  I usually make my own breads, but these rolls were inexpensive and looked pretty tasty (confirmed when eaten).  I should have gotten a fourth bag though.  We had the rolls and gingerbread with/after dinner Wednesday night.  For dinner we had chicken & artichokes.  But, I didn’t have any artichokes so I put in parsnips & potatoes instead.  That worked fine.  The recipe happily takes most any vegetable combination and cut of chicken.  We had roasted acorn squash on the side.

IMG_4197

After Christmas I made a stop at BJs.  I had a number of coupons that needed to be used before the new year.  Most of my purchases weren’t food so you don’t see them here.  (I did remember the shrimp this time!)

Grocery Update

December has been a busy month – worse than usual in some ways and less bad in others.  I’ll get to all that we’ve done in a later post.  But, I wanted to get the grocery updates in.

Conveniently I only made one stop this week – Stop & Shop.  Largely we ate through what we had in anticipation of Christmas stocking up / leftovers.

Goldfish and bread were on sale.  The other items were things we were running low on.  And, for reasons we’ll get to on another day, I’m trying to stay ahead of groceries right now even if it means buying things not on sale more often.

Grocery Update

A short post today.  The last big job for the contractors is to replace our countertops, so Monday they are tearing them out.  That means no kitchen sink at least Monday night, and maybe longer.  Since I’m very unsure and we have some evening events this week, dinners will be determined on a day by day basis.

But, I did go grocery shopping last week.  So here’s the update there.

I went to BJs.  I should have gotten frozen shrimp, but forgot somehow.  There’s some extra dairy and the soup had a holiday coupon.

I also made a stop at Wegman’s.

That was it though, not too bad really.  Frankly, too many other things going on!

Last Week’s Accomplishments – More Contractors

The contractors continue.  To some extent they’re wrapping up; in other was they’re just getting started.

  • The current contractors were here almost every day this week.  I also met with two new contractors for other potential projects (see next bullet).  They’re not done, but I did manage to take the latest grocery picture showing the new mudroom floor and wall.  Here’s a before and after in the same spot.

  • We are contemplating moving.  So, we had a couple of house visits, but nothing that seemed worth pursuing.  I was surprised anything new appeared on the market this time of year.
  • I had a Dr appt.
  • The older boys went for their ski fitting.  They’ll be taking lessons through the rec dept this winter.
  • We attended three birthday parties.
  • I got a significant amount of stuff cleaned out – both trash and recycling – of the garage.  I’m hoping to maintain momentum on the clean-out process.
  • I finally parted with the pile I’d set aside in the basement to part with.  Specifically we sold the saw and drill press; I gave away the smaller stuff.

November Grocery Review

Grocery Spending

The numbers are a bit high, but nothing concerning.  I did some restocking after our trip.  And, we’re in stock up sale season.

  • November TOTAL: $920.38
    • Stop & Shop: $95.26
    • Wegman’s: $315.44
    • BJs: $305.09
    • Other: $204.59
      • Local: $103.16
      • Star Market: $66.37
      • Trader Joe’s: $24.70
      • Target: $10.36
      • Other: $0

My first grocery stop of the week was Wegman’s.  I had intended to make fajitas last week with the steaks (3, one will go in the freezer) and pepper, but we didn’t get that far so they’ll be on the menu early this week.

IMG_4053

Later in the week I went to Stop & Shop.  The cans are all tomato sauce.  Normally they’re $1.19 each, but this week they’re 3/$1 which is as low as they ever get so I always get a bunch.  Even so I’ll probably be out before they go on this good a sale again.  The chicken packages were Buy One, Get One Free.

IMG_4135

I also went for my monthly Star Market trip.  They’ve changed their store brand packaging.  I don’t know yet if the oatmeal itself has changed; we’ll find out this week.  Last night we did pizza night with the football game (very disappointing).

IMG_4133

Saturday I went to the farm stand.  I went for green beans (not as great as in season, but still better than the grocery store) and eggnog.  I noticed the broccoli was still local so I grabbed some.  The raspberries were impulse, but they went fast and were greatly appreciated.

IMG_4137

Finally, I went to Wegman’s again as we were going to run out of milk.  The long bag is a sub sandwich for lunch.  The paper and plastic bags on the far left are a pastry & bulk trail mix, both free with this week’s coupons.

Here’s the menu plan for this coming week.

Saturday:
Shepard’s pie
Green beans

Sunday:
Homemade pizza for all

Monday:
Lemon chicken
Broccoli
Biscuits

Tuesday:
Chinese take-out

Wednesday:
Fajitas

Thursday:
Kids: Mac n cheese
Adults: Homemade mac n cheese

Friday:
Kids: Eggs
Adults: Homemade Pizza

Why WordPress, why?

I’m not sure what WordPress was thinking when they launched the new Edit window because, quite frankly, I can’t find any benefit.  There’s only pain.

Let me count the ways:

  1. When you choose a category, “Uncategorized” now stays checked also, until you manually fix this.  Doesn’t this seem wrong, by definition.
  2. You can no longer see when the post will be published unless you open the Publish submenu, which promptly disappears when you go back to typing.
  3. I can no longer drag & drop images from other folders on the computer.  I actually have to look them up.
  4. Speaking of images, now you have to open the boxes that allow you to label the images separately.  They used to be right there.
  5. Similarly, it used to offer a list of past posts when you used the Link function.  Now you have to paste in the URL, which seems to require opening a separate tab.

Now, I hope I am wrong on some of these things.  Or, maybe they’re still working on the interface and some of the functionality will return.  In the meantime, while I admit its prettier, I’d like the old functionality back.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Thanksgiving 2015

This past week was Thanksgiving and contractors.

  • We had a nice vacation weekend, with little effort on my part.
  • Our oldest went to a birthday party.
  • I completed all the spring & winter soccer registrations.
  • I had a Dr appt.
  • The contractors finished everything on the 2nd floor and basement.  Note: While they’re not doing that much, they are touching a lot of places.  It is nice to have them down to just a few rooms so we can return some rooms to normal use.

Grocery Update & Menu Plan

Since I wasn’t cooking, I didn’t have much I needed to buy this week; most of this is taking advantage of Thanksgiving opportunities.  I did bring mashed potatoes, gravy, and gingerbread.

I made a quick stop at Wegman’s this week.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  I usually buy Old El Paso taco shells, but Wegman’s didn’t have them so I bought Ortega.  We all agreed Old El Paso is better.

IMG_4006

Tuesday I also went to the Thanksgiving instance of the Farmer’s Market.  It’s the only off season opportunity, so this is it until June.  (Yes, some people would have stocked up more.  But, we don’t eat much squash and I’m ok with grocery store potatoes & onions.)

Here’s the menu plan for this coming week.

Saturday:
Leftovers

Sunday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets, carrots
Adults: Homemade pizza

Monday:
Salmon
Pan fried potatoes
Brocolli

Tuesday:
Shepard’s pie
Green beans

Wednesday:
Fajitas

Thursday:
Kids: Mac n cheese
Adults: Tuna noodle casserole

Friday:
Kids: Eggs
Adults: Homemade Pizza
