Grocery Spending

I was not an efficient grocery shopper this week.

On Monday, I spent $151.66 at Wegman’s.

IMG_6908

I had planned to go to Stop & Shop on Thursday, but realized I had other errands to run so it made sense to go on Tuesday instead.  I spent $51.21.

IMG_6918

I also spent $13.40 at the farmer’s market.

IMG_6920

However, I realized I forgot jalapenos for the fish tacos.  Also, because I had gone on Tuesday rather than Thursday, I didn’t have enough milk.  So, I went to Stop and Shop again on Wednesday.  While there I also got fresh tilapia for the fish tacos.  So, while I spent an additional $37.75, I do have frozen tilapia for a later date.  I also took the opportunity to get a second ice cream because the deal had a limit of one.

Grocery Spending

So, I took almost the entire summer off from a full post of this type.  But, we’re back and with more info since starting this month I’m planning to include budget info with each grocery trip vs just the monthly summaries.

I let Labor Day push the posts back last week.  Between that and the relatively long post covering all of August, I missed the first three days of September.  So, they’re covered here.

On Friday, Sept 1, we went blueberry picking.  I don’t have a picture of all the blueberries, but we got 8.3 lbs for a total of $31.13.

On Saturday, Sept. 2, I went to BJ’s for the first time in months.  I spent a total of $185.39 after 15 coupons totaling $37.75.

IMG_6856
IMG_6861

I spent $29.88 at the farm stand on the same day.

IMG_6864

On Tuesday, I spent $11.50 at the farmer’s market.  I was happy to see that peaches were still available.

IMG_6894

Then on Thursday, I spent $56.17 at Stop & Shop.  Most of these items were on sale, hence the quantities.  The milk, craisins, and yogurt were not on sale.

IMG_6897

You’ll see a lot of this show up in what we ate.  I’ll go back to Sept. 1 to cover the holiday weekend when we did some nice barbecuing.

Friday:
Kids: chicken nuggets, carrots
Adults: homemade pizza

Saturday:
BBQ ribs, corn on the cob, pasta salad, blueberry cobbler

August 2017 Grocery Review

Bringing us back up to speed.  This will cover the numbers for August as well as all the pictures.  Starting in September I’ll include the individual trip numbers with the pictures, as well as a total at the end.

August TOTAL: $703.53

  • Stop & Shop: $196.82
  • Wegman’s: $299.75
  • BJs: $0
  • Other: $206.96
    • Local: $99.85
    • Star Market: $107.11
    • Trader Joe’s: $0
    • Target: $0
    • Other: $0

Aah, back to better numbers.  Now, we were going for a number of days so we ate out vs grocery shopping.  I’m sure that didn’t work in our favor overall.  I also didn’t go to BJ’s so a trip there is in my future (actually already occurred on Sept 2, but that’s for another post).  I did shift a lot of my shopping back to Stop & Shop this month.

I’ve been wondering for a while whether shopping at Wegman’s is just more expensive.  When they first arrived two years ago I did price comparisons and they were mostly better.  But, I often buy the family packs there which is a larger initial outlay.  We do eat all of it, eventually, so it should have eventually evened out.  I’m planning to do another price book update later this fall now that the other stores have adjusted to their existence.  I also want to try to update it to include not just the regular prices of items, but the lowest prices some common items reach during a 6-8 week sale cycle.  Some items will go even lower once or twice a year, but I’ve generally identified those already.

And now, on to the pictures.

On August 1, I went to the farmer’s market.  After no local peaches last year because of a late spring cold spell, it was fantastic to have them back.

IMG_6649

On August 3, I made my first of many trips to Stop & Shop.  The Tic Tacs were free and everything else was on sale.  I put the Tic Tacs in the car for the Philadelphia road trip, though we didn’t go through all of them and still have some left.  Non-minty Tic Tacs are not my favorite, but the flavors were limited.

IMG_6650

After our trip to Philadelphia, my next stops were at the farm stand (top) and Wegman’s (bottom) on August 12.  We had three birthdays to celebrate, hence three cake mixes.  Plus one tub of frosting that was split over two of them.

IMG_6785

IMG_6788

On August 14, I went to the farm stand again.  We’ve really been enjoying the corn on the cob this year.  Plus, more peaches.

IMG_6802

On August 17, I made a small trip to Stop & Shop.  There was a container of blueberries too, but they disappeared before the picture got taken.

IMG_6806
IMG_6807

There was another hiatus before trips to Wegman’s and the farm stand on August 26.

IMG_6831
IMG_6833

I made my once a month trip to Shaw’s on August 28.

IMG_6843

And then I went to Stop & Shop for the final time in August on the 29th.  You can probably guess from the pictures that most of these were sale items with quantity purchase requirements.

July 2017 Grocery Review

So apparently I missed almost the entire month of grocery updates.  Since we did some traveling (and therefore had fewer grocery runs than usual), I’ll just cover them with the August numbers next week.

My last update was on July 31, and I didn’t do any grocery shopping that day so there won’t be any carry-over to the next post!

July TOTAL: $1,293.70

  • Stop & Shop: $53.70
  • Wegman’s: $751.56
  • BJs: $241.62
  • Other: $246.82
    • Local: $61.79
    • Star Market: $146.14
    • Trader Joe’s: $0
    • Target: $38.89
    • Other: $0

Still higher than I would like.  I’m going to try some new strategies come September.  One of them will be to include the cost info with the weekly photos.

Here’s a photo of some of the yummy BBQ we’ve had this summer.

Spendy week this week with big trips to both BJs and Wegman’s.  I also stopped at the farmer’s market and Shaw’s.

BJs was first, on Monday.

IMG_6626
IMG_6625
IMG_6627

While I was over that way already, I stopped at Target.  It’s the only place I can get green Gatorade and they have the best juice prices.

IMG_6629

Then, on Tuesday, I went to Shaw’s for pizza supplies and oatmeal.

IMG_6630

On the same day, I went to the farmer’s market.  I was disappointed nobody had spinach.

IMG_6631

Finally, on Saturday, I went to Wegman’s for our weekend BBQ supplies (and some basic groceries).

Grocery Update – Week 29, 2017

As discussed before, I’m a bit behind.  So, I’m going to post the last two weeks of groceries today especially because this week was pretty light.

On Monday, I went to Stop & Shop.  This was almost exclusively for drinks.  I also got some cherries and chicken nuggets on sale.

IMG_6618
IMG_6620

Then, on Sunday, I made a small trip to Wegman’s.  I would have gotten the bulk bag of potatoes, but they were out so I settled for a few loose ones.

Not much interesting in the meals department, but I did go to the grocery store.

On Monday I stopped at Star Market for roughly 10 each of pizza dough, pizza cheese, and oatmeal.  This should last us a few weeks.

IMG_6605

Then, on Thursday I went to Wegman’s for a regular weekly shop.

IMG_6608
IMG_6609

Yesterday I went back to Wegman’s to purchase items for grilling that night, plus a few things we were low on.  We had hot dogs and sausages for dinner.

IMG_6615

I also stopped at the farm stand.  Blueberries and cucumbers are in season locally now.  This farm stand also brings in produce from other areas; hence the broccoli.

IMG_6614

Since I didn’t add to our milk supply the second time I went to Wegman’s, I’ll be needing to do that early this week.  I plan to go to Stop & Shop this week to get some items we prefer from there and anything that might be on sale.

Grocery Spending

I’ve had an unplanned two week hiatus as I managed to get a long cold following the end of school and for 4th of July week.  I’m on the mend now so we’ll plan to get back up and running per normal.

At some point I’ll post the grocery trips from the missing weeks.  Meals have been very similar to baseball season since there’s was essentially no gap between spring and summer baseball this year.  The summer season does have a more regular schedule.  So, the plan is for quick/split dinners Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one weekend night.  But, we’ve already had a few rain outs and rescheduled games so some flexibility is required.

On to the shopping.  I tried to stock up before the kids were out of school for the summer so I wouldn’t need to make too many trips with lots of people.  Therefore, I’m expecting a slightly higher total.

June TOTAL: $1,379.78

  • Stop & Shop: $138.53
  • Wegman’s: $499.62
  • BJs: $428.46
  • Other: $313.17
    • Local: $103.25
    • Star Market: $147.87
    • Trader Joe’s: $0
    • Target: $62.05
    • Other: $0

I only made three stops this week, one of which was tiny.

Last Monday I went to Wegman’s.  This was mostly shopping for three meals – french toast, hot dogs & sausages, and tri-tip with chimichurri.  I picked up a full load of milk also, it just didn’t make the picture.

IMG_6592

On Thursday, I picked up three items at Stop & Shop.

IMG_6594

Then, on Saturday I was back at Wegman’s for the next weekend’s meals.  I should see if Stop & Shop carries tri-tip.  I don’t think they do.

There’s no other way to say it.  I made a lot of stops this week.  I went to Stop & Shop twice, Wegman’s twice, and Shaw’s once (no picture of that one).

My first trip to Stop & Shop was on Monday.  Hopefully this is the beginning of the transition from quick meals to full family affairs.

IMG_6499

Friday I made a very small stop at Wegman’s.

Then, on Sunday we went to Wegman’s again for a Father’s Day meal.

Grocery Update & What We Ate – Week 23, 2017

I made for grocery stops last week, which is more than usual.  One was the monthly trip to BJs.  Two were to Shaw’s!  I usually only go there once every six weeks or so.  But, they’ve been very low on pizza dough when I’ve gone recently and we’ve been using more of that because of baseball season.  You may see it as one of my stops this coming week also.

On Monday, I made my first trip to Shaw’s.  I restocked on oatmeal, which was on sale.  Kraft shredded cheeses and grapes were also on sale.  The Coke was for that afternoon.  And, I got all the pizza dough balls they had.

IMG_6464

On Wednesday, I went to BJs and Stop & Shop.  Both trips were for primarily non-food items that were on sale/had coupons.  You’ll see in the menu below that the chicken nuggets are not lasting long right now.

IMG_6469
IMG_6471

Now for Stop & Shop.  Rather than listing everything that was on sale, I’ll just say that the bananas (39¢/lb), shallot, and bagels were not on sale.

IMG_6473

Then on Friday, I tried Shaw’s again.  Two was it for pizza dough, but I did find some of the large bacon packages.

IMG_6483

As for what we ate, it was incredibly boring!

Monday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets
Adults: Homemade pizza

Tuesday:
Spaghetti & meatballs

Wednesday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets
Adults: Homemade pizza

Thursday:
Kids: Take out pizza
Adults: Homemade pizza

Friday:
Kids: Pancakes
Adults: Indian take out
Carrots
Popovers

Saturday:
Eggs

Sunday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets
Adults: Pan fried steak, potato pancake
