BJs Coupon Policy – Some Education is Required

≈ Comments Off on BJs Coupon Policy – Some Education is Required

I like that BJs allows coupons.  But, they need to better educate their staff on their coupon policy as I have repeatedly had the same problem (maybe I should just bookmark the page on my phone).

The policy states, in part:

“When purchasing a multi-pack of “individual for sale” packaged items, which is a set of items that could be sold individually (each item has a barcode) shrink-wrapped and sold together, shoppers can use multiple manufacturer’s coupons (up to 5), and ONE BJ’s coupon on a single selling unit. The total value of the coupons cannot exceed the total retail value of the item.

Examples of a multipack:
Three-pack of toothpaste

Two-pack of salad dressing
Three-pack of taco kits

Examples of products that are NOT a multipack:
Box of cereal that contains two bags (the bags cannot be sold individually)

Case of water
Case of soda
Case of juice
Case of motor oil

Members may also use one BJ’s coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon on a single item.”

So, when I buy Coke flats, Cheerios, diapers, etc they are not multipacks.  But, if I buy a pack of cans of mandarin oranges or Campbell’s soup, or (my personal pet peeve) sunscreen, I should be able to use one BJs coupon plus as many manufacturer’s coupons as match the number of items in the multi-pack.

Like I said, sunscreen is my pet peeve in this department.  Every year there is a BJs coupon for Coppertone.  Every year there are $1 off one Coppertone product manufacturer coupons.  Because BJs sells them as three shrink wrapped together, I should be able to use the BJs coupon plus three of the manufacturers coupons.  I have never succeeded in doing this without a fuss from the cashier who eventually relents and agrees to let me use them “just this once” because they’re only supposed to accept one manufacturer coupon.

But, a new coupon culprit raised its ugly head this past week.  Yes, this is the same picture from Monday.

As you can see, there are four bags of chips/popcorn.  This is because I had two copies of the $2.50 Frito Lay coupon shown below. (Note – A Pick and Pack bundle is two bags of chips.)

bjs-coupon-page-11142016

This time, I was first told I couldn’t use it because you had to buy both the chips and the dip (he was pointing to the “and” between “Pick” and “Pack.”  When I explained that “Pick and Pack” was the term for the bag containing two bags of chips and that it very clearly said “OR” before “Dips” I was told that the coupon was printed in error and wasn’t being accepted.  They would have a sign up soon.  Well, this was two weeks after the coupon went into effect – no sign.  And, I got the above from the corporate website today, which obviously hasn’t been updated.

So, while I agree that it may be an error (because that is a lot off), with no sign and no removal of the coupon from their own website, they need to accept them.  They did, very reluctantly and with much too much complaining on their behalf, hence the rant here.

Grocery Update

I made two significant trips this week and one small one that I did not take pictures of.  The small one first – I stopped at the farm stand for green beans and ham.

Now for the pictures (Apologies for the poor lighting.  I haven’t figured winter lighting out in this house yet.).  On Monday, I went to Stop & Shop.  Everything here was on sale except the juice, yogurt, and hot dogs.  Pasta was on its best sale of the year, but I had some already and I don’t buy a full year at a time.  Bottom round was $1.99/lb, which is great compared to its usual $4.99/lb.  I bought six pounds then cubed and froze it for later use.  Bananas were not on sale, but I had a store coupon for 10¢/lb off, bringing them to 29¢/lb.  So, I bought enough to match with the container of yogurt when making banana bread.  Most of this will be frozen for later use.

img_5619

On Wednesday, I went to BJs.  Many of these items had BJs coupons, though I had to work extra hard to use two of them.  More about that on Thursday.  I sous vided the pork chops over the weekend and they came out great.  It’s been a while since we had pork chops as they usually come out dry, but this method seemed to mitigate that problem so we’ll probably put them back in the rotation.

Grocery Spending

The spending is coming back down.  We’re also starting to see the fall stock up sales so our freezer is filling up, which is nice.  It will help to balance things out in the future as there have been, for example, a lot of beef sales lately.

  • October TOTAL: $1161.96
    • Stop & Shop: $461.50
    • Wegman’s: $284.30
    • BJs: $332.72
    • Other: $83.44
      • Local: $0
      • Star Market: $75.48
      • Trader Joe’s: $7.96
      • Target: $0
      • Other: $0

I made a number of grocery stops this week.  On Monday, I went to BJ’s (left – very small trip), Wegman’s (center), and Shaw’s (right).  This was not my original plan.  I had intended to buy white bread at BJ’s, but they were out.  Wegman’s was in between and I had my list.  I knew I didn’t need anything perishable there so I thought I’d see if they had the bread I wanted.  Nope!  So, I stopped at Shaw’s.  Unfortunately they were low on pizza dough so I’ll still have to head back there in a week or two.

img_5604

Then on Sunday I went back to Wegman’s for a more normal visit.  We had hamburgers for dinner that used half the ground beef.  I’ll use the rest in shepard’s pie later in the week.  I got a few milks so I can push my BJs trip towards the end of the week.  I got two bags of carrots because I had a coupon for $1 off a $5 organic produce purchase.  Carrots will keep and be eaten.  I got the small bag of apples because I had a $1 off a 3 lb bag which brought the unit price under that of the 8 lb bag.

img_5615

I also stopped at the farm stand mid week and got broccoli, green beans, swiss cheese, and one heirloom tomato.  But, apparently I forgot to take a picture of that.  After not purchasing much produce for a few weeks, I’m stocked back up in that department.

Dinners this week will be a bit hit or miss.  I have a rough plan, but we have two days with no school, two evening soccer practices, and two evenings that I am out.  So, we shall see.

Grocery Update and Menu Plan

This was a big week for grocery shopping, perhaps making up for last week.

On Monday, I went to Stop & Shop.  I had a lot of coupons, and thankfully many things were on sale.  For starters, I had coupons for $10 off a $100 purchase and 600 gas points with a $160 purchase (600 gas points = 60¢ off / gallon ≈ $12.00 off a full tank of gas).  It took a little work to get there, but I spent $160.88 after all sales & coupons, thereby earning the gas points.  I did buy three more bags of potatoes and two more chuck roasts than I intended (good sales, but we will need to eat them).  Otherwise I would have come in more like $125.

img_5489

On Wednesday, I went to Wegman’s.  This was primarily for milk, though I picked up a few other items while I was there.  There was another banana, but it got eaten before the picture was taken.

img_5504

I went to Stop & Shop again on Sunday.  This time I had $20 off $100 purchase and 2X gas points, among other coupons.  With the steaks, roast, and fish this was pretty easy to achieve.  That being said, everything in this picture except the bread, herbs, and bananas was on sale.

With sports wrapping up, I’m going to be getting back to menu plans.

Saturday:
Spaghetti & meatballs
Homemade bread

Sunday:

Pan fried potatoes
Peas

Monday – Halloween:
Kids: Hot dogs
Adults: Homemade pizza

Tuesday:
Beef roast
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
Carrots
Popovers

Wednesday:
Chicken pot pie

Thursday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets
Adults: Tuna noodle casserole

Friday:

I’m not going to post another menu plan until we get out of soccer season in a couple of weeks.  But, we did eat and I did buy groceries.

img_5485

That being said, I bought so few groceries that I did two stops in one trip and only took one picture.  The oatmeal is from Shaw’s.  I did also get 6 each of pizza dough and pizza cheese, but they had to go into the freezer/fridge before I had time to take the picture.  The primary reason for the Wegman’s stop was the granola bars which two of mine eat for breakfast among other uses.  The other handful of items were just to top off the pantry. All in all a nice, light week.

I did a lot of grocery shopping last week.  I admit it.

On Monday, I went to Wegman’s.  Most of this was standard restocking.  The avocados were for tacos later in the week.  The cheeses were for an evening social event.  It turned out I didn’t need the eggs as we already had another pack, but we’ll eat them eventually.  (For those of you thinking 8 dozen is a lot of eggs, which is what I had once these entered the house, the boys have eggs for dinner most every Friday and they eat a dozen.  Add in breakfast and cooking egg uses and we’ll certainly eat them up long before I have to worry about how to use them.)

img_5405

On Tuesday, I went to BJs.  I’m back to going every 4 weeks or so, so this was a big trip.  I took a picture of some of the items in the trunk as they were heading for the fridge/freezer in the garage.  I had some trouble with the lighting; the glow on the left is more bread.  As you can see, I bought my Halloween candy supply.  I really don’t know how many kids we’ll have this year so I may have over bought.  But, over is better than under and I made sure to choose things we don’t mind indulging on.  I hadn’t intended to get brown sugar, but in store they had a buy two spices get free brown sugar coupon.  Since I was planning to purchase 3 spices anyway, I grabbed one more + 2 coupons + 2 bags of brown sugar.  Along with that, there were coupons for PB, chocolate chips, chicken broth, and chips.

img_5412
img_5415

Then, we had weekend company so on Saturday we went to Wegman’s again to pick up items to BBQ.  We had steaks, salad, creamed spinach, pan fried potatoes, and banana cake.  I picked up a few other items while I was there.

I only made two stops this week.  On Wednesday I went to Stop & Shop.  Everything except the Gouda, Gruyere, and chicken nuggets were on sale.  The paper wrapper is cod.

img_5382

Then, I went back to Stop & Shop on Saturday.  I’ve started a pattern of shopping early in the week and then again at the beginning of the weekend because we don’t know what the weekend weather will be and we’d like to BBQ if possible.  Most of what’s below was supposed to be for Saturday’s dinner.  But, it rained.  And, it rained all day Sunday too.  So, we did sous vide steak instead, finishing it under the broiler.

September Grocery Review

Grocery Spending

This is the highest month we’ve had in a while.  But, I think the restocking post move is largely complete and that should balance out eventually.  The bulk of our shopping is swinging back towards Stop & Shop.  The seasonal sales that I stock up on are starting up and Wegman’s has stopped sending their coupon cards that offered $7-8 off each week.  With the farther distance to Wegman’s (though shortened by the move), those %7-8 mattered.

  • September TOTAL: $1,399.49
    • Stop & Shop: $542.09
    • Wegman’s: $337.41
    • BJs: $186.69
    • Other: $333.30
      • Local: $135.43
      • Star Market: $145.18
      • Trader Joe’s: $19.90
      • Target: $32.79
      • Other: $0

Grocery shopping is getting smoother; our ongoing issue is milk consumption.  There’s just a limit to the number of gallons one can buy at a time.

Tuesday I went to Wegman’s.  I also got two boxes of cereal and raisins, but they didn’t make the picture.

img_5361

I also went to the farmer’s market on Tuesday.  The raspberries were gone the next day.  The basil and tomato are used up.  The other items will be eaten early this week (except the apples which will last a bit longer).

img_5362

On Thursday, I went to Stop & Shop.  I had to go through twice as one could only purchase one roast per checkout and get the lowest price.Cheese was on sale; I would have bought more, but this was all they had.  The frozen veggies are for the baby.

img_5368

Friday I went to the farm stand.  The bread is for weekend french toast, though we decided that while different was nice this probably wasn’t our favorite french toast bread.  Since the picture isn’t so clear, that’s one pear, two apples, and three tomatoes in the lower left.

img_5370

Finally, Sunday we were at Wegman’s again to restock on milk.  The dozen gallons of milk are not shown, just the odds and ends we picked up at the same time.

img_5377

And, finally, this week’s menu.  The soccer schedule has changed yet again as it gets darker at night and they need to limit themselves to lighted fields.

Saturday:
Pot roast
Carrot soup

img_5375
Popovers

Sunday:
Veal parmesean
Garlic & herb pull apart bread

Monday:
Kids: Mac n cheese
Adults: Homemade pizza

Tuesday:
Chicken pot pie
Green & wax beans

Wednesday:
Baked cod
Carrots & sugar snap peas
Bread

Thursday:
Kids: Chicken nuggets
Adults: Homemade mac n cheese

Friday:
Kids: Eggs
Adults: Homemade pizza

Grocery Update & Menu Plan

Shopping is getting a bit more regular lately.  I think I’ve finally restocked those items we used up prior to the move so I’ve had fewer “I forgot X” trips.  That being said, I barely squeezed in a BJs trip on Monday so I took the picture of the pile in the car trunk and back seat.  If you look closely you can also see that it was raining.  I try not to go shopping when its raining because I don’t like loading/unloading in the rain, but sometimes it can’t be avoided.

img_5295
img_5296

On Thursday I went to Shaw’s.  They were out of pizza cheese last week so I mostly went for that.  But, oatmeal is also on sale for $1/box ($1.79 off), which is a pretty good deal so I bought the max (8) allowed for that item too.

img_5329

I also went to the farm stand on Saturday.  I’m pretty sure all of this is local.  I don’t usually buy yogurt there, but doing so saved a trip elsewhere.
img_5331

Finally, on Saturday I went to Wegman’s.  This was largely a restocking effort.  The cookies were for a dessert/appetizer pot luck that night.  The older bananas were to top off my supply at home so I can make two loaves of banana bread plus one banana cake this afternoon.

img_5341

And, the meal plan.  I went easy this week and bought a few pre-made items from Wegman’s.  This is still cheaper than take out.

Saturday:
Chicken cacciatore
Bread

Sunday:
Braised pork
Carrots
Mashed potatoes

Monday:
Spaghetti with Sunday Sauce
Bread
Raw veggies

Tuesday:
We have afternoon and evening activities so: Take out pizza

Wednesday:
Tacos

Thursday:
Kids: Macaroni & cheese
Adults: Tuna noodle casserole

Friday:
Kids: Eggs
Adults: Homemade pizza

Grocery Update

19 Monday Sep 2016

I made two trips to the grocery store this week.

On Friday, I went to Shaw’s.  This is a huge trip there for me, but they had lots on sale.  The grapes and bananas are for soccer snacks.  They didn’t have any pizza cheese.  I learned Italian wasn’t a great substitute.

img_5292

On Sunday, I went to Stop & Shop.  I find myself doing more weekend grocery shopping lately.  It’s a bit hard to predict the weekend menu with sports and weather.  Since we like to BBQ when possible, the current path has been to wait and shop day of.  It’s not an extra trip, just another thing to squeeze in on the weekend.  The fish is for dinner.  The ham is for school lunches.  The frozen veggies are for the baby – she likes these.  Pasta was on sale along with ice cream, cheese, goldfish, and applesauce.
