3D Art

I suspect this is a dilemma facing all parents.  What to do with the unending supply of papers that come home from school?

IMG_3315

For papers, or flat items, there are endless ideas online.  However, 3D art seems trickier.  For one, its hard to capture it as well in a photo.  Second, its just plain hard to store.  Third, its often hard to display.  So what do you do?

IMG_3309

I have the usual array of pinch pots, painted flower pots, and plates.  But, more recently I’ve started getting 3D cardboard and papermache structures – beyond the usual clay formations.  Some are to large for diaper boxes even.

I guess push will come to shove and some will definitely hit the trash.  For others – I’m thinking more durable, but smaller items – I will store them for a bit to see if the boys miss them.  If the papers are any guide they won’t.

It is Cold

Well.  The powers that be have decided that our winter wasn’t bad enough, so they’re giving us an epically cool spring.  Yesterday the high in Boston was 49, a record low high, and more than 20 degrees cooler than average.

I don’t mind cooler than average.  But, having to turn the heat back on in June is a bit much.  That being said, it’s rained for the past three days which has been welcome as May was also epically dry.  This month we’re expecting a slow warm up with many more highs in the 60s, but hopefully a more normal amount of rain.

Summer is Trying

After a very cold winter and fairly cold spring, we’ve had a few summer-like days recently.  (The pattern is due to break this weekend.)  Today was almost 90 and downright muggy.  Thank goodness for AC.

IMG_3293

The garden has been doing well.  We have lots of flowers on our strawberry plants.  The peas are growing nicely.  The broccoli and celery may have recovered from being taken down to nubs by some animal overnight.

IMG_3290

As you can see we also have lots of lettuce, plenty of chives, and some basil.  There’s also a pepper plant which is hard to see (first picture), but is doing well enough.  I’m just hoping the broccoli comes through before it gets too warm.  The lettuce can be picked whenever needed, and we’ve already taken some for salads as its grown.

When there’s a bit more space I’ll be putting in corn, beans, and sunflowers.  These will replace the broccoli & peas.  As of now I haven’t planned for the fall; we’ll see how things go.

We Have a Robin’s Next

The boys found a robins next in their climbing tree.  Unfortunately it is maybe 8 feet off the ground and in their tree.  So, they’ve had to stay out for most of the spring.  I let them in this week while the adult birds were away to take a picture of the eggs.

I haven’t seen the adults there much.  Between that and the height, I’m not sure what’s going to become of these.

Cubes?

I admit, I very much like the Closet Maid cube system, especially for organizing toys.  (I’m sure some other brand cube system would do great too, but this is what I have.)  Two squares is a good height and there’s enough room in each cube for most anything.  Because we have a lot of trucks (yes, boys), we use the bottom row as a parking garage and the top row for bins and other toys.  Really big stuff ends up on top.

IMG_2834

I made the tags myself using self laminating luggage tags.

But, as you can see in the above picture from a few months back the cubs do not stay square for long.  This is because their sides are cardboard.  They’re pretty durable.  In five years we’ve replaced two.  But, it’s time to replace two more.

IMG_3235

Once they’re replaced, they look nice and square for a short while. (Yes, I could have replaced the green one too.  But, its mushed, not actually broken through the fabric yet.)

I’ve looked.  I even talked to a professional organizer friend.  Apparently nobody makes plastic cubes to fit these shelving units.  With all the plastic bins available out there, I was surprised.  This is a huge marketing opportunity for someone!  (Write me if you do!)

How is the Winter Food Cleanout Going?

About a month ago I went through my fridge, freezer, and pantry and made a list of everything I should use before I reduce my oven use for the summer.  Call them winter foods.

I’ve made some progress.  The pumpkin pie filling, evaporated milk, artichoke hearts, tator tots, ham, cauliflower, and yogurt (in freezer) are gone.  Most of the uses were obvious, except maybe the yogurt that went into banana bread.  I’ve used some of the frozen mashed potatoes, pecans, cream of mushroom soup, and cream of chicken soup.  With these I made potato bread, banana cookies, tuna noodle casserole, and chicken pot pie.

I also went ahead and took a few photos of my fridge as it currently stands.  It’s looking more summery with the watermelon.

I realized my recent grocery pictures weren’t showing much produce.  (We do actually eat it.)  I think there are two main reasons for that.  First, I buy a lot of it in bulk so it won’t necessarily appear every week.  Second, I don’t always photo the stuff I buy locally, especially if its only 1 or 2 things.  But, there is some in there.  Behind the carrots are peppers, celery, and part of a cucumber.

This week I’m aiming to use up some more of the frozen blueberries and cream of mushroom soup.

I’ve Found a Textile Recycling Box

I got word a few weeks back that one of these had appeared near us.  The box has actually been there since the fall, but I was under the mistaken impression that items needed to be in good condition to go in.  I’ve only recently determined that this is a textile recycling box, vs a donation box.

Anyway, I expect to fill up a bag to take over soon as we cycle from winter to summer clothes.  I’ve come across another batch of socks with holes.  It’s painfully apparent that there are many items that will not survive as hand-me-downs after this winter.  At this point I’m making a mental note while I let them wear the clothes to play outside, but I’m not going to store them.

Finally, my twin who prefers chinos had 4 pairs he was cycling through.  When I was getting ready for the memorial service I figured I had him covered for nice clothes.  But, no!  It turns out 3 of 4 pairs had holes in the knees – varying in significance but enough that all will come out of circulation immediately.  The 4th was in my repair pile for some buttons that had come off.  As it is he is on the verge of moving to the next size, of which I already found him a few pairs of chinos.  So, first wearing was to the memorial service.

School Vacation Week

The boys are off this week and without thinking too hard we’ve got lots to do.

Monday was Patriots Day.  We were going to go to the parade, but it was canceled because of awful weather – very cold rain and high winds.  So, I took advantage of the cold (40s), wet spring day to make a big, oven heavy dinner.  It does not match my menu (link to 4/20).  We had ham, baked cauliflower, homemade egg bread, green beans, raisin sauce, and homemade cheese cake.  The boys did not like the cheesecake, but we made them all try some.  They’ve never had it before and the idea of cheese in cake was really throwing them all off.

Tuesday I took them bowling.  My 4y has been asking for this for a few weeks now.  I’d intended for us to play two games, but the 2y wasn’t really interested and the 9y lost the first game and therefore all interest.  So we came home.  The weather was beautiful so after lunch they went outside.  The trouble with outside this time of year is you get this:

IMG_3179

I’ve told them they need to clean it off and not repeat that feat as it isn’t fair to those who don’t want to get dirty to have their play things covered with mud.

Today the older three have dentist appointments so we’ll all be along for that trip.  Tomorrow we have a memorial service to attend.  Friday we have nothing scheduled.  I’m hoping for nice weather so the boys can be outside all day before heading back to school next week.

I’m Thinking Summer

Temperatures here are still running in the 40s.  And its been rainy so it feels colder.  Therefore, I decided to go through the freezer and pantry to identify foods we use primarily in the winter so I don’t have to store them all summer.  In the summer we BBQ more and use the oven less.  I also don’t pack lunches so single serve items are in much less demand.

Here’s what I found.  I’m going to aim to use these up before Memorial Day.

Pantry

  • Pumpkin pie filling / Condensed milk – used to make a pumpkin pie for Easter
  • Pecans – made one pecan pie for Easter; enough pecans for one more pie
  • Chestnuts
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Pineapple slices
  • Prunes
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Cream of mushroom & cream of chicken soups

Freezer

  • Blueberries
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Yogurt
  • Heavy cream
  • Egg whites
  • Tater tots
  • Homemade apple crisp

Refrigerator

  • Ham
  • Cauliflower

Most of these items are seasonal and will go on sale again before I need them for the holidays or we reach the depths of next winter.

There is Still Snow

Mercifully, all the snow in our yard disappeared yesterday.  That was a long time coming.

But, drive around and its not hard to spot the stuff still.  Sometimes its in the woods; its certainly in big piles in the mall parking lot.  But, its also in small piles where it was shoveled or plowed and the sun hasn’t gotten to all of it.

It’s been pretty warm this last week.  But, what snow is left is very dirty.  It’s supposed to cool off again next week.  I imagine the snow will be around for a while still.
