Last Week’s Accomplishments – Painting

25 Wednesday Nov 2015

We’ve had a lot going on with holidays and contractors.

  • I went to the preschool parent/teacher conferences.  All is well.
  • Our oldest had his soccer tournament, in which they won their division.
  • I got my haircut.
  • We attended the preschool potluck for our youngest.
  • I went to a PTA meeting with our new school superintendent, which was quite informative.  We’ll have to see where the new vision takes us.
  • We went to a 3y birthday party.

Here’s just one of the sort of things the contractors are taking care of for us – a mess of painting.  In theory I could paint myself, but windows are not my favorite and I have little time to do this with youngsters who won’t stay away from wet paint almost always around.

(Say hi to my reflection!)  No, these are not the same bathroom; the colored tiles are staying for now.  The wood is now white and the awful shade has gone in the trash.  It will be replaced eventually, but since we never actually close them it is not a priority.

Grocery Update & Menu Plan

I’m not sure this is the most exciting week, mostly because I’m not doing the primary cooking next weekend on any of the days – lots of family gatherings – so I’m not sure what the menus will be!

On the plus side, we did finally have the last soccer practices and games this weekend so by next week we should actually be back to normal.

First for the shopping,

I made a few stops this past week.  First I went to BJs.  (Note the new photo location – the only place I could find that wasn’t being invaded by the contractors.  You’ll see some more odd spots later.)  There’s not much out of the ordinary.  I was happy to see that they had pizza dough again, as it was missing last time I went.  That being said, I nearly bought out the shelf so it may be hit or miss going forward.  We’ll have to see.

IMG_3988

Thursday I went to Stop & Shop.  I had coupons so this particular configuration of cans/cartons of broth maximized my savings.  The big store coupons for the week were the flour, butter, potatoes, and chips; I don’t usually buy brand name AP flour or butter.  There are also four cans of evaporated milk to go with the four cans of pumpkin pie mix.

IMG_4001

Finally, on Saturday I went to Wegman’s.  It was much more crowded than during the week, but not bad.  I had a few items that are best to get there and I wanted to visit before the Thanksgiving sales ended.  This was my chance.

Cereal, granola bars, eggs, and tomatoes were what I really needed from Wegman’s.  I got the corn because we’re running low and the $1 off coupon was for a frozen food item this week.  The flour, turkey, and clementines were Thanksgiving sale purchases.  I would have bought more flour, but it was Limit 2.  The turkey is in the freezer for a later date.

Here’s the menu plan for this coming week.

Saturday:
Leftover braised pork (made for Friday’s preschool dinner)
Leftover egg bread (also made for Friday’s preschool dinner)
Mashed potatoes

Sunday:
Asiago chicken

Monday:
Take out pizza (Husband isn’t home and the kids have been asking)

Tuesday:
Kids: Eggs
Adults: Homemade Pizza

Wednesday:
Tacos

Thursday:
Thanksgiving

Friday:
Thanksgiving leftovers?

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Contractors

Continuing on the late theme from yesterday …

I felt like I was getting a lot done in the past week, even with the Wednesday holiday.  But, that slowed down as the week progressed.  Initially I was home with the contractors and things were getting done.  But, then they somewhat took over everywhere so I spent my time more keeping the kids contained or away in whatever form we could to avoid them.

  • We got a load of mulch delivered and 4 HS kids came to spread it around for us for their fundraiser.  They got through half the pile, though the most critical spots.  Now I have to finish it off before winter hits.
  • My oldest had this last practice and game for his fall team.  I thought this would be the end, but his spring team asked him to join them for a tournament this weekend so we’ve had a few more practices and are awaiting a few more games.
  • I made it to the preschool parent’s meeting, which was a nice night out.
  • We went to the older preschool class’ class dinner.
  • I went to the cheese festival at the farm stand; only the 4 year old wanted to join me.
  • I got through a mess of errands – returns at two stores; birthday present at another store; determined Bed, Bath, & Beyond didn’t have any of the items I was looking for; Trader Joe’s for yogurt & cereal bars; and the hardware store to discuss new kitchen counters – all in one kid-free morning.
  • The boys made it to math night.
  • I’ve been managing three contractors for 5 days now.  I think they’re about halfway done.

Grocery Update & Menu Plan

Well, this post is really late!  Turns out this week is more chaotic than I thought and not just regarding dinner.  We have contractors doing minor work on the house.  The issue is, its a little everywhere.  Specifically, the main hallways are all being painted (among other things).  As of now the only room not affected is the living room, which means getting anything done and keeping the kids entertained requires much extra effort.

I thought meals would be back to normal after the last soccer game last weekend, but he got invited to participate in a tournament this weekend so we’ll have to postpone “normal” until after Thanksgiving.

Besides 2 evening soccer practices, we have second grade math night and a preschool event during the dinner hour this week.  First for the shopping,

I made a few stops this past week.  First, I went to Wegman’s.  The juice boxes are for one of the preschool dinners.  The paper wrappers are swordfish we ate last week.

IMG_3980

Over the weekend I went to the cheese festival at the farm stand.  Naturally, I got a few items, including a fair amount of cheese.  The brown bag is seconds bananas, which work out to about 10¢ each and are great for banana bread.  The blueberries were not on my plan, but were begged and pleaded for by my 4y (and they were all eaten by the end of the day).  The cranberry sauce was another extra.  We usually prefer the can shaped variety, but I’ve had a variety of “Turkey Dinner” sandwiches this month and I decided a less jelly-like version would make a better sandwich spread.

Here’s the menu plan for this coming week.

Saturday:
Spaghetti

Sunday:
Chicken & Dumplings

Monday:
Kids: chicken nuggets, broccoli
Adults: homemade pizza

Tuesday:
Kids: eggs
Adults: homemade mac n cheese

Wednesday:
Beef stew
Oatmeal bread

Thursday:
Kids: shrimp, broccoli
Adults: leftovers

Friday:
Out at a preschool event.

Disney Review 2015 – the Meal Plan

Disney, Walt Disney World

For the first time, we tried the Disney Dining Plan.  We had the standard option which gave us 1 snack, 1 table service, and 1 quick service meal per person per day.  Because our oldest was 10 and youngest 2 on this trip, by Disney’s definition we had 3 adults, 3 kids, and 1 infant.  In theory the kids have to order off the kids menu (Disney usually, but doesn’t always, differentiate), adults from the adult menu, and anything ordered for the infant is extra.

First, some obvious points.  This is only beneficial if you actually plan to use table service meals.  They will take longer and often require reservations so if you want to maximize your time in the park and/or plan less, you may want the stepped down dining option that is quick service meals only.  There’s also a few levels of stepped up options that offer three meals, all table service meals, etc.  Overall, though, we felt the standard option was a pretty good compromise.

Second, the way Disney counts “days” maximizes the number of meals you get so you may need to go to a two point table service meal, for example, to actually use all of them.  Specifically, we arrived for dinner and left before breakfast – I think this would be pretty typical for a group traveling by air.  We also brought/bought breakfast for our room so we only ate two Disney meals per day.  This gave us a couple of extra meals.  We actually had planned to eat at a number of two point table service restaurants so those were fine.  But, we were going to have extra quick service meals.  Some of those were used up purchasing a 7th quick service meal for the “infant”.  Note:  as far as I can tell Disney does not track adult vs kid quick service meals.  They do for table service.  The others worked out as we ended up with a lunch reservation at Be Our Guest.  It turns out to be quick service at lunch, though two table service points at dinner, which worked out great for us.  I believe in the end we had to purchase one round of table service and a few quick service meals additionally, which is certainly better than paying for more than you use.

What about those snacks?  I knew going in that we’d have extra snacks so we weren’t too careful about using them.  We did bring our own water to the parks each day vs use a snack credit for a bottle of water.  We used the snack credits for the occasional extra (popcorn, pretzel, etc) or cold beverage (soda, Dole whip, slushies, etc).  All that being said, we still had over 30 snacks with two days to go.  Thankfully, we had a day at Epcot planned and the Food & Wine Festival was underway.  So, we snacked our way through lunch and the rest of our snack credits.  However, if this option had not been available I’m not sure how we would have used them up besides buying snack items that could be brought home (entirely unnecessary so I’m glad we could avoid that).

IMG_3807

My one issue with the Disney Dining Plan is that every adult meal, and table service kids meals, include dessert.  This is entirely unnecessary.  Since we had more people than adults we shared to mitigate the problem, but I could have done without desserts all together.  I did discover that at Flame Tree BBQ I could get fries or onion rings instead of dessert, and used that option.  But, I didn’t come across any other quick service places that offered alternatives.

In summary, I did feel the meal plan was worth it (count your planned meals first to see which plan works for you).  For us, breakfast in the hotel room works best.  However, its similarly better for us to eat dinner in the parks before leaving (plus we like the table service dinners) vs trying to cook in a condo or eat at a non-Disney restaurant; the kids are just too tired by that point.  Yes, I would use this option again.

Broiled Fish in a Greek Marinade

Fish

I don’t buy swordfish very often, but I was looking for some variety from my usual cod and salmon.  At the fish counter, the swordfish seemed like the best option.  And, this recipe was a huge hit so it will definitely be made again.

Recipe courtesy of Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library Fish cookbook, though I did modify it somewhat.

IMG_3982

5 Tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
1 Tbsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
zest of 1 lemon
1/4 cup lemon juice
salt & pepper
4 swordfish steaks
lemon wedges for serving

  1. Mix all the ingredients except fish & lemon wedges in a shallow non-reactive container.
  2. Add the fish and turn to coat.
  3. Cover and marinate 2-3 hours in the refrigerator.
  4. Preheat broiler (or grill).
  5. Place fish on broiler pan or grill rack.
  6. Broil/grill about 4 minutes per side.

Note: I forgot to take a picture of the actual dish, but since its the cover photo for the book, I included a picture of the book here to give you an idea of what the final dish looks like.

Wegman’s Fails & Price Check

≈ Comments Off on Wegman’s Fails & Price Check

Wegman’s has been open about a year now.  I wrote a review after it initially opened, but I thought I should revisit it.  I also completed my price comparisons between BJs & Wegman’s this week.

To follow-up on my review from a year back, I have been to Wegman’s more than I thought I would, especially over the summer when I was getting local produce from the farm stands and farmer’s markets.  I find their produce is often higher priced than Stop & Shop, but most other departments are priced better.  So, I spent the summer buying local produce, meats at BJs, and aisle items at Wegman’s.  Part of this also is that Stop & Shop was annoying me by making it hard to get bags, discontinuing items we purchase, and just generally being a less friendly place to shop.  And, while Wegman’s is still farther from our house, Stop & Shop is close to preschool which I’m not at in the summer.

All that being said, I’ve found some items at Wegman’s we really don’t like.  Specifically:

  • Store brand bottled water – I tried twice and the boys thought it tasted terrible.
  • Store brand egg noodles – They were much gummier than Stop & Shop.
  • Store brand deli meats – I tried a few though turkey and hard salami stood out as not great.
  • White mushrooms – I would have thought these would be fail proof, but two tries and neither were very good, and spoiled fast.
  • Store brand extra sharp cheddar cheese – It doesn’t compare to Cracker Barrel (which Wegman’s doesn’t sell).
  • Store brand pizza dough – It doesn’t compare to Boston Pizza Company (which Wegman’s doesn’t sell).

On the plus side, most of the store brand items I have tried we’ve been happy with – salad dressings, cream cheese, breads, etc.  I’ve also been happy with both their seafood and meat departments.  And, the aisle items are still cheaper than Stop & Shop.

So, this past week I was able to complete the price comparisons between Wegman’s and BJs.  I’d been hoping to do this for a while as Wegman’s advertises that their Family Packs make club memberships unnecessary.  Well, its still necessary.  I checked 30 items across all departments except produce (which I only rarely buy at BJs anyway).  I only found five items – pork butt, NY strip steak, Babybel cheeses, Swanson beef broth, and Kosher salt – that are cheaper at Wegman’s using standard pricing.  Most items are decidedly more.  There are some that are basically the same – whole chickens, milk (with Wegman’s card), Finish tabs, 3oz bath cups, cream of mushroom soup, and tomato paste.  I think generally, though I’ll stick with my basic categorizations for purchases and continue to look for sales, especially the best of the year variety.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Fall is Ending

Things are settling down here for the winter.

  • One twin had his last soccer of the season.
  • The oldest three went to the dentist, receiving clean bills of health.
  • Our oldest had his last Thursday soccer practice.
  • I brought in the Halloween decorations.  I discarded the pumpkins in the woods since one had rotted in on itself.  Usually the deer come eat them so we’ll see what happens this year.

  • Our 4y spent most of the week home sick, so I got some putting away done.
  • I made the last batch of banana bread from my bags of seconds bananas.

Grocery Update & Menu Plan

Things are returning to normal, in fact more than normal as evening sports are phasing out for the year.  The last one is tonight.  So, we’ll hopefully be having more family meals.

I went to Stop & Shop again this week.  Frankly, I can’t think of the last time I went two weeks in a row!  But, they had some good things on sale.  The Coke, juice, and Oreos were the big coupon items of the week.  Pasta, bacon, cheese, and sugar were on sale.  The cans are tomato sauce, which was on sale though not the best of the year sale.  I’m out so I only bought what we’ll use soon.  English muffins were buy 1, get 2 free (which is the only time I ever buy them).  Finally, Hood ice cream was on sale and if you bought that you could get a store brand ice cream free.

IMG_3964

The next day I went to BJs.  The apples (better the grubby hands get their own bags vs a big grab bowl) and bananas are for soccer snack this past weekend.  The frozen pizzas are probably enough to last me through the winter – adds to my lunch options.  They were out of pizza dough or I would have gotten that too.

IMG_3966

Thursday I went to Shaw’s, primarily to pick up the pizza dough BJs didn’t have.  But, oatmeal & cheese were on sale so I bought them out of those two items.  The candy was a post Halloween sale and we somehow got next to no Kit Kats this year.  Since they’re a family favorite I thought I’d grab the sale bag.

IMG_3971

Finally, on Friday I went to Wegman’s.  I’d thought I’d take the week off, but the boys were asking for dried strawberries (for which there was a coupon this week, and which I forgot to put in the picture).  So, I also got two chickens and lemons for dinner over the weekend, as well as a few things that are usually cheaper than Wegman’s.  Since I had both younger boys with me I didn’t attempt to work on the price book.

IMG_3973

Here’s the menu plan for this coming week.

Saturday:
out for Japanese Hibachi

Sunday:
Spatchcocked lemon chicken
baked potatoes
Brussels sprouts

IMG_3976IMG_3977

Monday:
Kids: mac n cheese, broccoli
Adults: homemade pizza

Tuesday:
fish (not sure which yet, I’ll decide what inspires me when I’m there)
salad
rice

Wednesday:
spaghetti
potato bread

Thursday (I’m out.):
eggs

Friday:
Out at a preschool event.

Disney FastPass – Post Mortem

Disney, FastPass, Walt Disney World

IMG_3794

For those of you who read my post about booking FastPasses, you’ll remember I was less than thrilled with the process.  Well, having now used them I can’t say I feel any better about it.

The only positive about FastPasses is that you do have a few rides per day where you don’t have to wait in line.  And, these are usually the more popular rides with longer lines.  And, as I said in my previous post, if everyone is doing the same things every day the system works fine.  BUT, I suspect most families/groups at Disney do not want everyone to do the same thing all the time, but much of the time.

I won’t reiterate what I wrote earlier, just update based on my experiences in the park.

First, nothing that happened at the parks improved my opinion of the FastPass system.  It is definitely my least favorite part of the Disney experience.  First, it locks you into certain parks/rides at certain days/times which reduces flexibility (with the advantage of shorter lines).  But, more importantly its implemented horribly.

We used what we wanted of the FastPasses we had booked.  Then, similar to what I experienced when I originally set them up, I had basic issues that just shouldn’t have been when trying to sign up for the 4th FastPass at a kiosk.  Specifically, because it is such a pain to break into groups (and we weren’t sure what big kid rides the 4y would want to go on) I often had a few FastPasses go unused.  As would be expected, there were never any top rides available by the time we booked the 4th FastPass.  But, there was no way at the kiosks to regroup everyone to go on the group friendly rides that were available.  Even though the time slots had passed it wanted me to rebook FastPasses for the random leftovers that hadn’t been used and the 4th for others separately.  So, I had to stand there and cancel the unused FastPasses on my phone which then allowed me to book a ride for all of us together.  First, the kiosk should let you do this (and, in one case the attendant insisted it just wasn’t possible, was shocked that I could do it using the phone, and insisted he’d never seen anyone trade Test Track for Spaceship Earth).  Second, once the time slot has passed, the system shouldn’t have you locked in anymore.

Also, I saw/heard a bunch of folks swapping bands in the parks.  I don’t think anyone had issues, but it made us wonder why the Fast Passes aren’t for the group, vs the individual, like the meals.  I suspect Disney would express concern that the thrill rides would book up first.  But, at least in the Magic Kingdom Peter Pan, princesses, and other kid rides have some of the longest wait times.  And, I’d far prefer to wait 60 minutes with my 10y than my 2y.

Finally, in between these two posts I tried using the phone number to book a few FastPasses for our group (we had four join us for a few days making a total group of 11).  Apart from their being more familiar with the system than the average user, there is really no benefit to this.  They can’t do anything you can’t do on the regular system.  So, if there aren’t any more FastPasses available at whatever timeslot you booked first, they still can’t add the new folks.  Frankly, the only advantage of the “Add” capability is that it does try to put them in the exact same timeslot vs being off by 15 minutes, but this is a weak benefit when compared to all one would assume it can do, but can’t.  And, if you do add them, they’re in your group meaning you now have even more people to group/regroup depending on attraction.  I do not recommend adding friends and family to you fast pass.  Similarly, there’s no point in calling the phone number unless you’re actually having trouble with the system.  Its advertised as a help for large groups, but since their capabilities are similarly limited there isn’t much benefit to trying to get in touch with them.

I’ve copied my recommendations from before below (1-5), and added new ones based on the in-park experience.

The Way I’d Like to See the Fast Passes Work

  1. Keep the current system, because if everyone wants the same thing it is great.
  2. But, allow people to book one Fast Pass at a time.  That way, you could book everyone in your group into The Mine Train without having to grab the same number of Anna/Elsa tickets (for example).  Then let people add Fast Passes, up to three total per person.
  3. This option would also let folks grab the critical (to them) Fast Passes and then think about how to flesh out their schedule later.
  4. Similarly, if you copy a Fast Pass over to another member of your group, you should be able to copy only one ride vs the entire set.  And, you should be able to choose which one of their Fast Passes is being replaced, rather than losing the whole set.  As it stands, if subgroup 1 books critical attraction A and subgroup 2 books attraction B, there is no way to regroup them and switch one of their Fast Passes to a shared attraction without attempting to get overlapping Fast Pass time slots (or losing the critical attractions already reserved).
  5. If you find later that you need to split the group, you should be able to switch attractions before switching time slots.  Ie, your tall preschooler refuses to ride The Mine Train at the last minute – the app should let you quickly see what other Fast Passes you can get for the current timeslot, or slightly later.  Families often want to spend time together so being able to ride in parallel is highly beneficial.
  6. Once a FastPass timeslot passes without use, it should automatically be marked as used in the system and freed to be booked again.
  7. If you can do it on the phone ap, you should be able to do it at a kiosk.  Deleting remaining FastPasses to enable regrouping is the obvious one here, but I bet there are some other features that don’t exist in both places.
  8. Finally, make the FastPasses good for the group, not the individual.  This would make life a lot simpler for everyone involved.
