Frugal Twin Tips

Everyone’s budget and definition of frugal is different, but I’ll try to throw out a few thoughts.

I buy specific brands for a few things:
Gap/Gymboree/Lands End for pants because of fit/wear
Carters for pajamas because of fit
new brand names for shoes/boots (Stride Rite, New Balance, etc.) for fit/wear

That being said, I know when the clothing brands I buy are on their best sales of the year and buy what I need then, even if its off season. I also don’t buy shoes every 3 months, I don’t even go in to get them fitted until I think they need new ones. This means we do usually skip a size (or 2). But, I’ve found the brand names shoes do wear better than the cheap stuff.

Through size 5T, I shop a lot at Target. I’ve been very happy with their Circo brand for shirts, shorts (not pants), swimwear, and snow gear.  Once they hit kindergarten/size XS its a different story and I go elsewhere.

I don’t shop Craigslist/ebay/etc and I barely shop consignment sales/stores.  The exception is Gap chinos which one of mine likes to wear everyday and which are often readily available in excellent condition at consignment sales if I happen to be there.

Finally, I would say think about what you need. And try things on every season to confirm that it really does need to be replaced vs the size on the tag. We do very well on 4-6 outfits per child. It does mean doing laundry more often, but its still the same number of loads. And, they have favorites. Even though I can, and do, use hand-me-downs I prefer to have one child use up the item so the next gets the new/preferred version.

I’ve Found a Textile Recycling Box

I got word a few weeks back that one of these had appeared near us.  The box has actually been there since the fall, but I was under the mistaken impression that items needed to be in good condition to go in.  I’ve only recently determined that this is a textile recycling box, vs a donation box.

Anyway, I expect to fill up a bag to take over soon as we cycle from winter to summer clothes.  I’ve come across another batch of socks with holes.  It’s painfully apparent that there are many items that will not survive as hand-me-downs after this winter.  At this point I’m making a mental note while I let them wear the clothes to play outside, but I’m not going to store them.

Finally, my twin who prefers chinos had 4 pairs he was cycling through.  When I was getting ready for the memorial service I figured I had him covered for nice clothes.  But, no!  It turns out 3 of 4 pairs had holes in the knees – varying in significance but enough that all will come out of circulation immediately.  The 4th was in my repair pile for some buttons that had come off.  As it is he is on the verge of moving to the next size, of which I already found him a few pairs of chinos.  So, first wearing was to the memorial service.

School Vacation Week

The boys are off this week and without thinking too hard we’ve got lots to do.

Monday was Patriots Day.  We were going to go to the parade, but it was canceled because of awful weather – very cold rain and high winds.  So, I took advantage of the cold (40s), wet spring day to make a big, oven heavy dinner.  It does not match my menu (link to 4/20).  We had ham, baked cauliflower, homemade egg bread, green beans, raisin sauce, and homemade cheese cake.  The boys did not like the cheesecake, but we made them all try some.  They’ve never had it before and the idea of cheese in cake was really throwing them all off.

Tuesday I took them bowling.  My 4y has been asking for this for a few weeks now.  I’d intended for us to play two games, but the 2y wasn’t really interested and the 9y lost the first game and therefore all interest.  So we came home.  The weather was beautiful so after lunch they went outside.  The trouble with outside this time of year is you get this:

I’ve told them they need to clean it off and not repeat that feat as it isn’t fair to those who don’t want to get dirty to have their play things covered with mud.

Today the older three have dentist appointments so we’ll all be along for that trip.  Tomorrow we have a memorial service to attend.  Friday we have nothing scheduled.  I’m hoping for nice weather so the boys can be outside all day before heading back to school next week.

Stomach Sickness and Bunk Beds are Not a Good Match

There will be no picture today.  You really don’t need that.

I’m of mixed opinions on bunk beds.  The boys like them and they give us a bunch more floor space, which is nice.  But, its difficult to do the sheets/blankets under good conditions, let alone when someone is sick.  This time I decided to clean from the floor up, which might seem kind of backwards but which allowed me to get closer and closer to the heart of the problem without having to touch/cross the mess.

But, there was the full bedding on top, plus the quilt on the bottom (removed from sleeping child and replaced without waking him up!).  We lost one stuffed animal, but its recent and can be reordered; the others in his bed were saved.  We threw out four stuffed animals that got hit a bit, but nobody actually uses anyway.  I might have been able to clean them, but it was a good reason to reduce our stuffed animal count.  Thankfully the furniture nearby was easy to clean and the waterproof mattress cover almost entirely spared the mattress.  Finally, I tossed the rug from that side of the room.  It’s 10 years old from Target and the matching one from the other side of the room is worn too so I may just replace them both.  Either way it wasn’t worth the effort of cleaning it.

The rug and animals were the biggest casualties of this illness.  My two year-old did hit the couch when he had it, but I already had the fabric on order to reupholster it so its sanitized, but I’m not worrying about it much.

The Randomness of Four

My 4 year-old required I take some interesting pictures this week, so I thought I’d share.

The first is his birthday cake, which was inspired by the Wegman’s bag of flour (but had to have chocolate sprinkles).

The second is his spaghetti.  They were doing a color mixing project at school, but I think it all just ended up black/brown.

And, finally I was told that I just had to take a picture of the hole in the back of his pajamas.

The morning after that picture was taken he proudly showed me that he could flip the tag through the hole like a tail.

What to do While I Wait?

25 Wednesday Mar 2015

I find myself waiting for one child or another multiple times per week.  Sometimes one can watch the children, in which case my preferred waiting activity is to watch them while talking with the other adults.  But, my toddler usually doesn’t let me stay in one place so we watch briefly (if I’m lucky) before watching someone else’s child (always more interesting) while I follow him around so he doesn’t leave or otherwise get into trouble.  When the weather gets nicer I will take him for a walk in the stroller, but according to the Weather Channel that is no time soon.  Maybe next year when he can be dropped off for these 30-45 min activities I’ll bring a book.  It’s not really long enough to leave and actually get anything done.

The trickier one for me is the 5-10 minute wait before picking someone up.  Honestly, I play Candy Crush.  Yes, that’s a bit cliché.  But, I spend no money and I bother no Facebook friends.  I like puzzles and am willing to try again (or wait) until the Tooth Fairy comes along and promotes me to the next level or the lives regenerate.

I’d like to do something more productive, but what.  I used to keep a magazine in the car, but that’s not much better.  I do try to think up quick errands, but unless it’s a drive through nothing is quick with a toddler in tow.  I’m open to suggestion.

Parent / Teacher Conferences

A short post today to thank the school for thinking about those of us with multiple children.  I had noticed that my kids’ teachers offered conferences staggered by 10 minutes so one doesn’t have to rush from one conference to the next, but also doesn’t have to wait the full duration of one.  I learned this week they offset some of the grades on purpose for the very reason of multiple children.

A big thank you to whoever thought that up!

I also thank whoever made the switch to online conference signups this year.  It is so much easier to arrange conferences for multiple children when one can look at all the teacher’s availability at the same time vs picking a time in one classroom and then going to the next and hoping for the best.  My goal is to always get them all on the same day so I only have to arrange one day of childcare.  That is much easier to achieve now.

The Yellow Balloon

For over a month now there’s been a yellow balloon stuck in a tree about 300 feet behind our house.  It’s not on our property, but its not much closer to anyone else and we probably have the best view.

It’s finally starting to warm up and we need the ice/snow pack to get there over an otherwise marshy area with its fair share of poison ivy.  So, we sent the older four boys on a mission to get it this week.

For reasons the adults couldn’t figure, they set off with a sled, a full-size snow shovel, and a jump rope.  Unfortunately, upon arriving they discovered that the balloon was about 12 feet up an unclimbable tree.  But, it was determined that it was tangled on a single small branch.  When they came back to report, Dad sent them back again with the pole saw.  Success!

I’m happy to report that the balloon has made the trash.  The branch is cut, but back in the woods.  Most importantly, we’re not left looking at an out of place yellow blob.

He’s Out!

It was coming eventually – our 2 year-old escaped his crib, repeatedly.  So, we decided to take the side off so its now a toddler bed.  But, this means that very little (beyond groceries, meals, and getting folks where they need to be) got done this week.  Instead, time was spent with additional baby-proofing and general sanitizing of the room so that he isn’t turning the bedroom inside out multiple times per day.  On the plus side I did clean out a bunch of stuff that I put away, threw away, or set aside to sell.

So, here’s what I got done.

  • Threw out 4 socks
  • Threw out 2 shirts
  • Fixed 2 books – Thankfully his new found freedom is resulting in less book destruction.
  • Chose fabrics to reupholster the living room sofas and dining room chairs, which desperately needs doing.

Moving Towards Spring

We changed up our after school activities this week.  I was happy that the boys were excited to return to swimming lessons.  We’d taken a few months off.  One, the 3y class was full.  Two, it’s tough coming out of swimming in winter, in the dark, and with a wet head.  Of course, I made this decision last November not knowing what sort of winter lay in store for us.  That decision worked out very well.

Today is also the last day of skiing lessons for my oldest.  This is actually a make up day for one of the bad weather days earlier in the winter.  The snow will be around for a while to come though.  Unfortunately, we’ll miss his new Thursday afternoon class as I wasn’t expecting skiing to run this long.  The twins start drawing class this afternoon.  It’s a bit colder again today, but I’m hoping to get the younger two out in the snow while we wait for the older ones’ classes.
