Last Two Weeks’ Accomplishments – October 2016

We’ve been busy.  Lots on the schedule and the weather has been gorgeous so we’re trying to maximize our time outside before winter bears down.

  • I purchased Halloween candy.
  • We identified what everyone wants to be for Halloween and purchased a few necessary items to make that happen.
  • We went to the local hay maze where this year they had potato cannons.  Those were very popular!

  • 5th grade math mornings started (finally – all the Monday holidays!)
  • We installed blinds in the bedrooms.  They’re helping both with light control and insulation now that its getting colder.
  • Over the two weeks, we had 6 soccer games, 4 soccer practices, and 2 baseball clinics.
  • We attended one play date.
  • 3rd grade math mornings, 5th grade sports, and swimming are ongoing.
  • I attended preschool back to school night.
  • I hosted a ladies evening get together.  The boys were very cooperative as I was the only parent home.

Grocery Update

I’m not going to post another menu plan until we get out of soccer season in a couple of weeks.  But, we did eat and I did buy groceries.

img_5485

That being said, I bought so few groceries that I did two stops in one trip and only took one picture.  The oatmeal is from Shaw’s.  I did also get 6 each of pizza dough and pizza cheese, but they had to go into the freezer/fridge before I had time to take the picture.  The primary reason for the Wegman’s stop was the granola bars which two of mine eat for breakfast among other uses.  The other handful of items were just to top off the pantry. All in all a nice, light week.

Of LEDs and Edison Bulbs

Edison Bulbs, LED Bulbs

Last week there was a post on another blog I read that touched on the light value of LED bulbs.  I commented there, but thought I’d expand my comments and add pictures here.

First, let me say that I am so glad that fluorescent (of all sorts) are basically out of our lives.  We wrote that into the contract for the new house as I don’t want to be dealing with the mercury and other chemicals those entail.

We’ve had many LED bulbs.  These days one can use them for any sort of lighting fixture, but you do have to choose more carefully that I feel like one had to with incandescent bulbs.  Today one can buy many fixtures with integrated LEDs.  We have a bunch in this house so hopefully they’ll last a long time as I’m not entirely sure if one replaces the entire fixture or just the bulb when they do finally fail.

Regardless of location/type, the Kelvins are critical. For us, 4000 K is too sterile; we like 2700 K or thereabouts. I also feel like many of them are just ugly – whether its the cooling base or the shape of the LED itself.  In the picture below, I put a typical incandescent bulb, my favorite LED bulb (though they’re out of business now since they had leaking problems with other models), and a more readily available LED bulb.  The Duracell is on the cool end of the spectrum and has too industrial looking a base for me – though I’ve seen worse.  But, it will be fine when we need to replace the bulbs in the garage and I only have a few.  The Switch bulb is the level we prefer, we have lots of them, and have had no issue with ours leaking.  We also only have a handful of free standing lights that don’t have integrated LEDs so I expect our Switch supply to last a long time.

img_5482

We use Edison bulbs in all the fixtures that don’t have integrated LEDs.  By some trial and error I discovered that it is a bit challenging to find a dimmable, LED Edison light bulb.  Adding to this problem, antique-styled bulbs come in many shapes and filament patterns.  We preferred Edison squirrels nest.  On the left I what I bought first.  It was accidentally not LED, and its not dimmable.  But, we’ll use it in a few locations until the bulbs give out.  The center is the dimmable LED I found, which we’re very happy with, and its box.  On the right is a chandelier bulb, which we tried and found weird in our chandelier because of the short cylinder shape the light emanates from. We don’t have another chandelier so I’m not sure if/where we’ll reuse these.

img_5484

I tried to take a few pictures of the bulbs in their fixtures, both on and off so you can see the differences.  As you can imagine it is challenging to take a picture of an on light bulb, but here they are.

The kitchen light fixtures have the incandescent Edison.  When on, its just a ball of light.

img_5474
img_5475

We put the LED Edison’s in the dining room after discovering the incandescent bulbs didn’t support the dimmers.  As an aside, it turns out non-dimmable bulbs can overhead the dimmer even if they’re fully on.  As you can see, with the LED bulbs, the “filaments” are more distinct when on and more visible when off.

A couple of other miscellaneous notes.  I’m not sure they make sense economically for three way bulbs as 3-way LEDs are very expensive.  It is possible they’ve dropped in price since I looked a few years back, but they were way up there at the time.  I don’t have any three way lights anymore so this is now a non-issue for us.

Some people do notice a flicker with LED bulbs.  I don’t, but I have been told it is the case.  I don’t think its enough to cause problems, but it can be an annoying revelation.

Grocery Update

I did a lot of grocery shopping last week.  I admit it.

On Monday, I went to Wegman’s.  Most of this was standard restocking.  The avocados were for tacos later in the week.  The cheeses were for an evening social event.  It turned out I didn’t need the eggs as we already had another pack, but we’ll eat them eventually.  (For those of you thinking 8 dozen is a lot of eggs, which is what I had once these entered the house, the boys have eggs for dinner most every Friday and they eat a dozen.  Add in breakfast and cooking egg uses and we’ll certainly eat them up long before I have to worry about how to use them.)

img_5405

On Tuesday, I went to BJs.  I’m back to going every 4 weeks or so, so this was a big trip.  I took a picture of some of the items in the trunk as they were heading for the fridge/freezer in the garage.  I had some trouble with the lighting; the glow on the left is more bread.  As you can see, I bought my Halloween candy supply.  I really don’t know how many kids we’ll have this year so I may have over bought.  But, over is better than under and I made sure to choose things we don’t mind indulging on.  I hadn’t intended to get brown sugar, but in store they had a buy two spices get free brown sugar coupon.  Since I was planning to purchase 3 spices anyway, I grabbed one more + 2 coupons + 2 bags of brown sugar.  Along with that, there were coupons for PB, chocolate chips, chicken broth, and chips.

Then, we had weekend company so on Saturday we went to Wegman’s again to pick up items to BBQ.  We had steaks, salad, creamed spinach, pan fried potatoes, and banana cake.  I picked up a few other items while I was there.

House Design – The Fireplace

Now that we’re more settled, it seemed like a good time to share some of the design elements of the new house.  Much is standard, but I will share some of where we were able to make changes or design choices.  I’ve posted a few already:  the pull-out bathroom trash and walk-in pantry.

I wanted small tiles around the fireplace, so this is what we went with:

img_5431

The paint is Benjamin Moore Cabernet (purple) and Mascarpone (white).

The tiles are Loft Super White 1×2 for the surround and Living 12×24 Black for the hearth.   One thing we learned is that the best solution for the exposed edges of glass tile is to purchase some 1×1 tiles and fit them in rather than cutting the glass.

I also mentioned that I had hung the mirror over the fireplace.  Unfortunately, it fell and broke so its not in the picture and we need to decide if we’re going to replace it.  I was trying to use Command strips for hanging in this house.  I had used them with posters in the previous house and they removed very easily without marking the paint.  But, two items have fallen days after being hung using the Command strips here.  Now, neither had a finish like a standard picture frame.  But, both had many more Command strips than the packaging recommends by weight.  And, both fell because the Command strip separated from the item – not because the velcro failed.  So, I’m going to revert to nails going forward as I don’t want to be dealing with further breakage.  All in all, not a positive experience.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Still Catching Up

I realize I’m a little late on this, but here it is.

  • I back posted a few more Monday’s worth, including April grocery numbers.  This catches me up to mid-July, which isn’t as bad as it sounds as I’ve gotten many of the weeks since on time.
  • Math mornings started.  These will run weekly through the end of the school year for the older three.
  • It rained all day Sunday, which washed out baseball.  This was our first real rainy day in a long time – heavy, steady rain (not hurricane Mathew) – and it was welcomed.
  • But, Thursday was beautiful.

img_5393

  • I finished cleaning up the garage enough to finally get the cars in.  We were waiting on the driveway top coat anyway, and I got it done before the rains came.
  • We had extra mulch placed in the play area to make it deeper so the boys hopefully won’t wear down to the weed barrier as easily.
  • We had two trips to the dentist.
  • I got my hair cut.
  • We got a mirror hung over the fireplace.

I only made two stops this week.  On Wednesday I went to Stop & Shop.  Everything except the Gouda, Gruyere, and chicken nuggets were on sale.  The paper wrapper is cod.

img_5382

Then, I went back to Stop & Shop on Saturday.  I’ve started a pattern of shopping early in the week and then again at the beginning of the weekend because we don’t know what the weekend weather will be and we’d like to BBQ if possible.  Most of what’s below was supposed to be for Saturday’s dinner.  But, it rained.  And, it rained all day Sunday too.  So, we did sous vide steak instead, finishing it under the broiler.

Basic Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken, Chicken Pot Pie

Yes, there are plenty of recipes already on the internet.  And, yes, there are fancier versions.  But, this one is relatively quick and easy, the kids will eat it, and it reheats well.

You can adjust the chicken/potato/carrot ratio.  Parsnips or turnip are also nice additions.  I prefer to make two shallow pies, but you could make one deep one depending on your family’s feelings about crust.

img_5394

Ingredients:
6 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs
2 potatoes
6 carrots
chicken broth – up to 3 cups
1/4 c (1 pkg) brown gravy mix
1 can cream of chicken soup
2 Tbsp corn starch
1/4 c water
1-2 pie crusts (recipe below)

Directions:

  1. Cut chicken, potatoes, and carrots into bite size pieces.
  2. Add chicken to a large pot.  Cover with water and boil 20 minutes until cooked through.
  3. Move chicken to baking dish(es).  Add potatoes and carrots to chicken water.  Boil 30 minutes or until softened.
Add potatoes and carrots to chicken in baking dish(es).
  4. Move cooking liquid to measuring cup and add enough chicken broth to make 3 cups.
  5. Add soup and broth to the pot.  Stir to combine.  Add the liquid, stir, and bring to a boil.
  6. Combine the corn starch and water.  When the soup/gravy/liquid mixture is smooth, add the cornstarch.  Boil for a short time to thicken.
  7. Pour gravy over chicken and vegetables.  You will have about 4 quarts.
  8. Top with pie crust(s).  Bake at 400° for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Flaky Pie Crust (Joy of Cooking)

This recipe makes 2 single or one double pie crust.  Halve it or freeze the second if you only need one.  I use a food processor, but you could do it by hand.

Ingredients:
2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
½ cup shortening
1 stick unsalted butter
generous 1/3 cup of cold water

Directions:

  1. Add the flour, sugar, and salt to food processor.  Pulse to combine.
  2. Add the shortening.  Pulse to the consistency of cornmeal.
  3. Add the butter.  Pulse to pea-sized bits.
  4. If your unit has a feed tube, drizzle the water through the feed tube while pulsing to combine.  Do not over mix.  If you have to pour the water in directly, do so in 2-3 batches so you do not over mix.
  5. Press into a flattened circle and wrap in wax paper.  Refrigerate for 4 hours, or up to 2 days.  If you will not be using it that soon, place the wax paper pouch in a plastic bag and freeze.  If you are only using half, split after the refrigeration stage and freeze the remaining portion.

Why has nobody thought of this before?

Most new kitchens have pull out trash.  One can buy kits to retrofit kitchen cabinets with multiple pull out trash can options.

When I started looking at the design for the family bath in our new house I realized that there was no place to put a trash can except inside the cabinet under the sink (which I realize is typical for many people).  But, the boys have a hard time landing stuff in the trash can on the floor and having it inside a cabinet won’t help.  Plus, they fill it so it often overflows unless someone comes by to crush it down.  So, the pull out bathroom trash was born.

img_5366

This was supposed to be a stack of three drawers between the sinks.  Instead we replaced it with one drawer and a pull out trash, just like one has in a kitchen.  Soooo much better.  There’s no mess on the floor.  It doesn’t fill up between trash days.  And, I don’t know what I would have put in those drawers anyway.

When I first came up with this idea, I searched the Internet and couldn’t find a picture or reference to such a thing so I’m claiming an original idea!  I highly recommend you copy it.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Consignment Sale Shopping

Things are cranking along now.

  • We had our first Math Night of the year.
  • I ordered blinds for the bedrooms.
  • Two of three soccer games (and a practice) were rained out this week, but we really do need rain.
  • Baseball was also rained out.
  • The forecast, even at 9:00 was for rain on Monday, but it was beautiful and rain never materialized.
  • Since it rained Saturday, I was able to go to one of the local consignment sales.  The pants are for the boys – two pairs of Gap chinos, one pair of Gap jeans, and one pair of Land’s End pants for $2 each.  I’m not sure they’ve even been worn.  They’re pretty big, ranging from size 7-14, but someone will wear them eventually.  I’d have bought some items in the size 5-7 range, but as expected there wasn’t much selection.  Everything else is for the baby, ranging from 12m-2T from left to right.  Total spent: $39.25.

img_5372

  • The dishwasher got replaced! (All is well so far; check back in another week.)  Once it was removed from its slot, the faulty areas & discoloration were evident.
