Cuisinart, recall

Unless you have been in hiding, or don’t think about kitchen stuff at all, you probably know that in December Cuisinart recalled about 8 million food processor chopping blades because metal fragments were coming off in people’s food.  You probably also know that they’re getting a lot of bad press because of how long its taking to get people new blades, despite telling them to throw out the old one immediately.

I filed for my replacement blade on December 16, 2016 – three days after the recall went out.  On December 22, I received a form email, thanking me for my patience.  It also said they’d let me know when my blade was on the way.  I received basically the same email again on February 4, 2017.  It also included their much discussed online recipe book (apparently it contains recipes that require the chopping blade), but I haven’t looked at it.

Well, months went by and I didn’t hear from them again until it just showed up on Friday.  I definitely would prefer to have the blade vs another email, but it should be pointed out that they never did alert me that it had been shipped.

Some pictures of the new vs old blade and the lengthy set of instructions (obviously meant to prevent them from being sued by the customer or trash collector that cuts themselves).  Clockwise, its the new blade in its complete packaging, the new blade out of the packaging, the two blades together for comparison, and the old blade packaged for the trash.

I have used the new one and it works fine.  It’s also easier to clean, which is a nice side benefit.  But, it took the full six months to get here.

Other things that happened last week:

  • I managed to get the whole house cleaned, at basically the same time.
  • We hosted a Mother’s Day brunch.
  • The younger boys had their last skating class.
  • I went to the 5th grade camping trip meeting.
  • The contractors came by to adjust the doors.
  • We had 4 baseball games.  We also had more rain and thus rain outs.
  • We had 3 soccer games.
  • We went to soccer and baseball practices.
  • The older boys had bike club.
  • We went to the kindergarten concert.
  • We went to the art show where the 3rd graders’ work was on display.
  • We went to a high school baseball game.

Last Two Week’s Accomplishments – Another One Bites the Dust

This past week we parted with quite a few pairs of pants, including this one.  There were also a few socks, but mostly pants.  Frankly, I’m surprised this pair lasted the winter.  Gymboree athletic pants have not held up well for us in the past.  Thankfully its spring.

  • We’ve only had 5 baseball games so far.  4 have been rained out.
  • We’ve had 3 baseball clinics.
  • The baseball players went to the opening day parade.  I made a banner for their team.
  • Soccer games were also affected.  Over two weeks we had 4 and 2 were cancelled.
  • Only 1 soccer practice was cancelled.

The rain policy for both baseball and soccer is age dependent.  It’s also often hard to get enough kids to play a rescheduled game.  I’m not sure how many of these games will end up getting rescheduled.

  • The 5th → 6th grade transition has begun.
    • I went to two meetings at the middle school.
    • We registered for middle school classes (foreign language & music choices).
  • I went to meetings at both the elementary school and preschool.
  • We had two weeks of bike club and skating.
  • We had 1 doctor’s appointment.
  • We had 1 playdate.
  • We went to 1 birthday party.
  • I got out the next bin of clothing for the baby to see what we had for summer / next size.  Turns out we’re in good shape for everything except tops so I’ve been doing a little shopping to fill in that hole.  It’s been tricky finding non-pink (all the bottoms are pink) onesie tops with sleeves, but we’ve managed.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Launch!

It was school vacation week so on Friday I took the boys to Launch (part of a group event).  This was planned well in advance, but it was a rainy day too.  The place seemed packed, but I’d never been there before so I’m not sure.  We jumped for 1.5 hours then had pizza and drinks for lunch.  Eventually, the boys found the arcade and the younger ones were definitely more interested in that vs more jumping.

  • I took my car in to get the bumper replaced from the accident.  They gave me a loaner car.  I got my car back in three days, which really isn’t too bad.
  • The oldest went to four baseball practices.  Games start this week.
  • We also had skating and soccer.
  • The preschooler went to a birthday party.
  • I went through the boys’ closets and moved along anything that had gotten too small.  It doesn’t look like we need much for this summer, which is great.
  • We went to the shoe store to have all their feet checked.  Only the oldest needed new shoes.
  • We tried on all the swimwear.  Turns out we only need new items for the oldest and youngest.  We may also need a few water shoes, but those haven’t been checked yet.
  • I went through the next size hand-me-down box to see what girl options I have for this summer.  There are some gaps there so I’ll be looking for a few items.
  • I did most of the rest of the summer activity signups.  Two left.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Patriot’s Day 2017

Holiday weekend here so the posts have been a bit off.  Patriots Day is a local holiday, probably best known elsewhere as the day of the Boston Marathon.

In other news:

  • We had our final indoor swimming and adventure classes of the year.
  • Two had skating class.
  • We had three baseball practices, two soccer practices, and three soccer games.
  • I attended the preschool family breakfast.
  • Two went to a birthday party.
  • I had a Mom’s night out!
  • We had a more relaxing than usual four day weekend.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – The Wrong Pasta

This is hardly an accomplishment, though it doesn’t happen every day.

The sale price was on all Prince pasta.  If we liked Tricolor Penne, I would have tried to see how much I could get off.  As it was, the Elbow Macaroni is two shelves down so the stocker definitely noticed the issue.

In other news:

  • I had three parent-teacher conferences.  All is well.
  • I had a Dr. appointment.  All is well there too.
  • We had the first full day of soccer practices.  The second was cancelled by a torrential rainstorm.  We had our first two soccer games.
  • We had the last 3rd grade math morning of this year.
  • Two boys went to Little League Picture Day.
  • We went to swimming, baseball, adventure, and skating classes.
  • One boy went to see the Boston Symphony Orchestra with school.
  • I filled out three more field trip forms.  It certainly seems like there have been more this year than last.
  • Most of us attended the Preschool Ice Cream Social.  This is a once a year, ice cream for dinner event.  There’s also a very popular clown.
  • I filed the accident paperwork with the insurance company.
  • The adults went to see Logan; definitely not a kids movie.

  • Yes, a very big one.  The little guy saw this last fall and has been requesting it for many months.  He is very happy with it.
  • We had the first spring baseball practice (indoors) and the first spring soccer practices (outdoors).
  • We had swimming, adventure, and skating classes.
  • I got my hair cut.
  • The older four boys went to a Bruins game for their birthdays.  The Bruins won, which is always nice.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Choral Concerts

It was an up and down week.  Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures to share for anything this week so it will just be text.

  • We went to two of the kids’ chorus concerts last week, so that made the title.
  • We had one playdate.
  • The baby and I finished up our doses of antibiotics.  Nobody else got that, but we did have one dose of the stomach bug last week.  Thankfully, nobody else got that either.
  • We had one well child doctor’s appointment.
  • We went to swimming, skating, adventure, and baseball classes.
  • We went to one birthday party.
  • I went to my friend’s house to offer some thoughts as she is looking to sell.
  • The hardwood flooring fellow came to tighten things up; the boards are expected to continue to move as they acclimate over many more months.
  • I got rear-ended.  It was minor, but I took it to the shop to get an estimate.  They’ll do the repair in another month.  (It drives fine.)
  • We got the final two spring soccer schedules.  If soccer was all, we’d do pretty well with having enough adults to cover all the games.  Of course, we have baseball to work in there also and I don’t anticipate having those schedules for another few weeks.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Sous Vide

  • I used the sous vide machine a lot this week.  We made steaks twice, once from frozen which was a new discovery.  I also made a roast, salmon, and eggs.  So, five times total.  It cooks things through evenly, requires little supervision, and basically can’t overcook.

IMG_6125

  • I finally got the two birthday parties worth of Thank You notes done.  Two more to go.
  • I talked to the town about being parked in by a construction truck.  I think it was a positive conversation.
  • We had one sick and one healthy person doctor appointments.  After some antibiotics everyone is doing fine and no additional people got sick.
  • We had another round of talking about a spot in the kitchen counter.  Next week the quartz vendor is coming to, hopefully, straighten everything out.
  • It’s been unseasonably cold.  And, even though there is snow on the ground, its so compacted as to be icy and not good for playing.  After two days of relative warmth its going back below freezing tomorrow.  The warm air must be somewhere!

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Little Friends

The week got off to a fairly standard start and then filled up.

  • We voted in the town election.
  • The boys went to two math mornings and one before school sports session.
  • The boys had swimming, skating, and adventure class.  Nobody attends more than two of these.
  • We had two baseball clinics.
  • I met with our landscaper and builder to discuss new outdoor projects and the status of some remaining punch list items, respectively.

  • I went to the preschool shop local fundraiser.
  • We had preschool picture day.
  • I threw out three pairs of pants that no longer had knees.  Despite today’s weather, that is a sure sign that spring is coming!
  • We hosted a play date.  I also babysat my neighbor.  These two things combined occupied most all of my time Friday so I didn’t get anything posted.
  • I started the activity sign-up, organizing process for this summer.  It’s amazing how early some places fill up, often before everywhere has even released their schedules.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Spring is Coming

≈ Comments Off on Last Week’s Accomplishments – Spring is Coming

This week signaled the beginning of the end (of the school year).

  • We began the transitional activities of swimming lessons, adventure class, and indoor baseball that tend to lie between the winter and warm weather sports.  We also got (one last we hope) dusting of snow.
  • We had one doctor appointment.
  • We had a date night (belated Valentine’s Day).
  • Our oldest had a pitching clinic.
  • I started signing up for summer camps.  On the one hand it seems early.  On the other had I didn’t want the 1-2 things they really want to fill up and they do eventually.  I’ll do more registrations as the week goes on to give us a base and then probably wait until summer and add camps if they’re still interested and space is available.
  • I also got the summer pool membership paperwork so that needs to be filled in.
  • In house news, once the snow melted we found a few things had moved outside.  So, they came by to replace a screw on the windowsill.  Actual touch-up paint and caulking will wait for warmer weather.
