Last Week’s Accomplishments – Unsubscribing

A rainbow isn’t an accomplishment, of course, but it is nice to see.  Last week was vacation week and the weather was excellent.  We reached 70° one day and well over 50° for a few others, so all of the snow is gone.

  • Being vacation week and mostly excellent weather we spent a lot of time outside.  The first half of the week there was still some snow.  This is the later part.
  • We went to one kid get together and one adult evening out.
  • We had two skating lessions and one baseball clinic.
  • We two of three spring soccer team assignments.  We have one of two baseball team assignments.  That only leaves the two kindergarten teams.
  • I finished cleaning out the office.  This was a big project.  But, it feels good to be largely done and the painter was able to do his touch-ups without things in the way.  A big part of this was parting with broken & unused toys.  I found four boxes labeled “out of circulation toys,” which means the boys haven’t seen those items in at least a year.  I tossed most of the broken items and I put most of the rest in the donate/sell pile.  I did keep about a box worth that are in between kids at the moment.
  • The painter finished his retouching.  And, the tile guy came to fix the cracks that had appeared as the house went through its first winter cycle.  Things are back to new!
  • I took 15 minutes to unsubscribe from most of the store emails I’d been receiving.  I was reaching the point where I was auto-deleting more emails than I was actually reading.  And, nobody needs daily emails from every store they ever shopped at.  So, I went through my trash folder for the past week and unsubscribed to most of them.  This has cut down my inbox dramatically.  In another month, I should probably do this one more time just to catch those that send emails less frequently.

A Month in Review

I usually post the accomplishments posts on Tuesdays, but with the standard holidays, snow days, and now school vacation week, things are getting a bit off.  So, rather than wait yet another week, I decided to post it here.

  • We finished up skiing lessons.
  • Our now 4 year old started skating lessons.
  • We hosted two birthday parties.  We attended two birthday parties.
  • We’ve had some contractors through for warranty work.
  • We’ve been to three doctor’s appointments.
  • We went to preschool family day.
  • The boys had their school valentine’s day parties.
  • I got more unpacking done.  I’m now down to 6 boxes apart from those in the unfinished basement.  Hopefully I can finish those off in the next few weeks.
  • The older three boys saw the LEGO Batman movie.
  • We took the oldest three plus the baby to the Museum of Science.  There were three things we specifically wanted to see: DaVinci, Chocolate, and Journey to Space.  We also stopped in at a few of the permanent exhibits.  Thankfully we got their fairly promptly after it opened because by the time we left at noon it was packed and loud.  A function of school vacation week, I’m sure.

  • I took the youngest boy to see the annual model train exhibit with his friend.

Next week we’ll be back at school, at least for a few weeks before April vacation.  After that it will be the spring stretch of chaos and then summer.  Time rolls on.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Mostly Disinfecting

The stomach flu is circulating locally so I decided it would be a good time to buckle down on the cleaning & disinfecting.  So, all the surfaces got a good deep clean:

  • Switches, doorknobs, cabinet pulls
  • Sinks & bathrooms in general
  • Fridge, oven, microwave handles
  • TV remotes & other electronics

While I was cleaning the switches I took the time to get off any remaining construction gunk.  The top three show the before; the bottom three the after.

I also cleaned the construction crud out of the little box the laundry hoses feed through.

Otherwise it was an unusually basic week with not a single non-standard activity.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – The Window is Fixed

Nothing particularly dramatic this week, but

  • I fixed the window!  The weatherstripping had been coming loose whenever it was opened, but I was able to determine that the segments just needed to be re-positioned.  Hopefully its all set now.

img_5906

  • Baseball winter clinics started for the eldest.
  • We attended the 5th grade choral concert.  This was the first time he had to wear real dress clothes – tie and all – so it was a big event.
  • We had a few contractors through to adjust things on the punch list – door latches, a chipped light fixture, some switches, etc.
  • I mostly completed the once in a long while cleaning tasks on the first floor.  I should finish those today and move on to the second floor.
  • We attended a birthday party.
  • We hosted a family birthday party for the baby’s first birthday.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Cleaning Out

Yes, for many people January is a cleaning month.  Frankly, I’m still unpacking and some of the cleanout has to do with that – things we should have thrown away before moving and boxes of things to keep that can be recycled.  We also missed the last trash pickup of 2016 and were delayed a day for the first pickup of 2017 because of the holidays.  So, the trash/recycling pile rivaled those from the first few weeks after the move.

  • Unpacked a few more boxes.  Put those items away & recycled the boxes.
  • Touched up the paint in the living room.  Yes, dings do happen.
  • Gave away some extra tile that doesn’t match anything in this house.  This made me realize that we probably have some other handyman type supplies that don’t match anything in this house and so should be given away also.  Finding them is a project for another day.

  • I registered the boys for skating, swimming, and adventure (ropes) classes for later in the spring.
  • All the before school activities started up again so we’re out early on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
  • Skiing lessons started.
  • Winter baseball started.
  • I’ve tried to stay home as much as possible to get things done around the house.  I’ve been out so much of the fall sorting moving or holiday related issues.  Tomorrow I do have to go out again though.

Last Two Weeks’ Accomplishments – Christmas 2016

Things have been busy.  While I finished the Christmas shopping with time to spare, there was still plenty of wrapping and cooking to do.

  • We made Christmas cookies.  We usually do gingerbread, but I tried sugar with icing this year.  The boys like gingerbread better so once we’re through our dessert backlog in another week or so we’ll make those.  I also found some eyeballs this year, but the preferred to us them upside down as tree decorations.  Each boy has their own tray, then I used up the batter & icing with some Christmas trees with actual eyes.

  • We relaxed.
  • We ate.
  • We assembled many LEGO sets and played many video games.
  • We saw Rogue One.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Freezer Audit

The days are numbered so here goes –

  • All the shopping is done!  Wrapping is another matter.
  • We had one play date.
  • We had 4 dentist appointments.
  • We held a birthday party.
  • We had our first skating lesson of the year.  Our kindergartner has decided he wants to give it another go.
  • I planned the Christmas weekend meals and necessary shopping.  This includes my trip to Stop & Shop last Saturday, a trip to BJs today, and trips to Wegman’s & the farm stand on Friday.
  • I reorganized the freezers.  We have 3.  Two came from the old house plus the new house came with one.  I wasn’t making the most of them and it seemed wise to sort them out before stocking up on Christmas roasts.  There was nothing I expected to throw out, I just wanted to resort so I could better optimize what was where for location and frequency of door opening.

  • So, on the left is the main part of the freezer in the kitchen before.  Top right was the top drawer on that freezer.  Middle right is the empty freezer that hadn’t even been cleaned/put back together since the move; this one is in the garage.  Bottom right was the other freezer in the garage.
  • I took all the meat out of wherever it was and sorted it.  The ground pork I put in the fridge for dumplings Saturday night.  Everything else went into the previously empty freezer.  It is farthest from the kitchen and is therefore opened the least often.

img_5802

  • The closer freezer in the garage got all the bread – daily, banana bread, extra flour, etc.
  • The freezer in the kitchen got the ingredients, odds & ends, frozen vegetables, quick meal items, and ice cream.

Last Week’s Accomplishments -Santa!

I’m doing ok with the Christmas run-up, so here goes.

  • I took the younger two to visit Santa.  This is obviously much easier during the weekday so once they hit Kindergarten they’re done.  Our current Kindergartner would really like to go this year, but I think we’ll mail him a letter instead.
  • I cleaned up the tile/paint pile in the basement.  I know the bag of concrete is still visible in the picture, but it has made it to the garage.  It was starting to harden.

img_5750

  • We had some really sloppy weather on Monday so the boys got a few extra hours of video games in before school.

img_5788

  • We went to two math mornings.
  • We went to one play date.
  • We went to swimming and adventure classes.
  • We ventured to the mall on Saturday for a few Christmas items.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Holiday Season 2016

Things have settled down a lot now that fall sports are done and Thanksgiving has past.

  • We had the last fall Before School Sports – one less morning we have to wake up extra early.  (Math mornings continue.)
  • The baby got her final flu shot.
  • I got a hair cut.
  • We had blinds put on the first floor.  I was trying to do something interesting here, but in the end went with the same basic honeycomb shades we put in the bedrooms.  I may change up the living room eventually, but for now they do the job of privacy and sun blocking, which were getting critical.
  • The older three boys were fitted for skis for their lessons which start in January.
  • We attended one birthday party.
  • The adults went out for dinner.
  • We finished the Christmas decorating – ornaments, village, and outdoor lighting.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Sorting the Hand-Me-Downs

29 Tuesday Nov 2016

≈ Comments Off on Last Week’s Accomplishments – Sorting the Hand-Me-Downs

Thanksgiving was pretty much the focus last week.  We also started the run-up to Christmas.

  • I finally got a picture of the baby with all her shoes.  Note, these aren’t actually all the shoes I’ve found in the hand-me down boxes.  But, these are all the size 2s which is her current size (note, this is the smallest size I found).  I don’t think there are more than 4 pairs of any other size.  This seems like an awful lot for someone who can’t actually walk.

img_5679

  • We went Christmas tree shopping.  Many years back we had an artificial tree.  It got dusty and technology had advanced so we got rid of it and had real trees for a few years.  This year we decided to get a new fake one – LED, pre-lit, etc.  I had done some pre-shopping, but we ended up checking out Home Depot and BJs before settling on one from Lowe’s.  It’s not as thick as the old one, but it goes up much more quickly and I think we won’t notice once the ornaments are on.  One gripe I had about real trees is that often it seems like the ornaments are draped on the tree as there isn’t space for them to hang.
  • We also audited our string lights and discovered that they’re all indoor/outdoor.  I wasn’t expecting that, but we have more outdoor decoration potential here so it came in handy.
  • I got some new candles for the windows.  The ones we’ve had for the past 10 years were really dim so we’re trying a new brand.  I’ll see how one looks before opening the other boxes in case I need to return them.
  • I went to Kindergarten special person day with the baby.  We answered questions for the class about our family.
