freezer challenge

No post yesterday.  I really have a hard time getting anything done when the kids are here.  After two snow days last week, Tuesday & Wednesday were snow days this week and then yesterday they had a planned half day.  Fingers crossed that next week’s Nor’Easter doesn’t materialize so we can all get back on track!

Some background on the freezer challenge:

  • I kicked it off in November and updated the status in January.
  • The goal was not to stop shopping, but to use up things that had been in the freezer for a while.  I’m allowed to make new purchases and buy things to complement what I’m using up.

Items on original meat list left after January update:

  • 6 packages (3-4 per pk) of chicken thighs with bones & skin
  • 1 5.5-lb package of chicken thighs with bones & skin (1 meal for us)
  • 8 5 packages (2-3 per pk) of boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 9 packages (4-5 per pk) of thin-sliced chicken breasts
  • 3 lbs chicken wings (These are probably waiting for summer smoking.)
  • 3 1 3-lb chuck roasts (We need two for a meal so I’m hoping this goes on sale one more time before summer so I can grab one more to use this up.)
  • 4 salmon fillets
  • 4 lbs of tilapia fillets
  • 5 lbs 1 lb of ground turkey (We always use 2 lbs so I’ll purchase another 3 lb pack from BJ’s to use this up.  Then everything will be fresh.)

New meat that has appeared since January:

  • 5 salmon fillets (I purchased a new bulk bag because there wasn’t enough for us in the old one.  But, I plan to use these this weekend so the salmon will stay freshly turned over.
  • 4 lbs pork loin chunks cut for stew
  • 1 pork tenderloin
  • 1 bag of beef bones for stock
  • 1 package of chicken nuggets
IMG_7762
IMG_7763

As you can see the picture on the left is pretty organized, but the freezer on the right is where the remaining trouble is!

Obviously we still have a bunch of chicken to eat up.  I’ll supplement this with other proteins.

Ingredients left after the January update:

  • Partial BJ’s bag of sliced almonds
  • Partial BJ’s bag of walnuts (I have used some of these, but there’s still about half a bag left.)
  • 7 1-cup packages of blueberries (these are ones we picked and I froze in vacuum bags)
  • 9 basil-in-chicken-broth cubes
  • 12 bags of egg whites, mix of 4-ct and 8-ct
  • 3 8-oz blocks of cream cheese

Clearly I used next to nothing in this category, probably because we were sick for most of February.  A lot of these will be used for desserts which don’t make the top of the list when you’re sick.

Miscellaneous items left after the January update:

  • ½ box of popsicles (these are waiting for summer)
  • 13 7 loaves of banana bread
  • 18 17 servings of butternut squash ravioli (I might be off on this count as I didn’t remove everything from the freezer, but its a lot.  These will be lunches for me.) I did eat a few, but I obviously didn’t count them all because there are still this many left!
  • 2 loaves of gingerbread

I did slightly better here, but most all of these need to go before summer as they won’t get eaten then.  Obviously the popsicles can wait.  And, a few of the butternut squash ravioli would be fine.  But nothing here will age really well.

I’ll do a final update in June before we switch to the summer diet.  I better be done with all the meat (except maybe the wings) and all of the miscellaneous (with the few exceptions mentioned) by then!

Next week I’ll update the pantry situation, although nothing there is nearly as critical as the freezer was.

Grocery Spending

This was a relatively light week for groceries.  I made two trips to Wegman’s and one to Stop & Shop.

My first stop was Wegman’s on Monday, when I spent $87.43.  Looking at it, this was a rather produce heavy shop for us.  The jicama was free and I had a coupon for the corn tortillas.  We used the tortillas, cilantro, chicken, and a few other things to make enchiladas later in the week.  This was the second time I’d made them.  We decided we like the recipe, but not corn tortillas which is just as well because we always have flour tortillas in the house and corn tortillas were really a pain to work with.

IMG_7738
IMG_7741

I made another stop at Wegman’s on Wednesday, spending $86.68 in advance of the second Nor’easter.  Included is a third package of corn tortillas.  This was before I had made the enchiladas and I was worried I didn’t have enough with just two packages.

IMG_7742

Finally, after we were finally freed Saturday from the snow and downed trees I spent $57.67 at Stop & Shop.  I could have put this off until Monday, but I hadn’t been out of the house in a few days and with a third Nor’easter in the works I have other stops to make then.  This largely covered the week’s sale items.  In fact the only things that weren’t on sale were the macaroni & cheese, cake mix, margarine, hot dogs, mushrooms, and bananas.  I missed a chunk of watermelon (on sale) in the picture.  The gum and granola bars were free; I wouldn’t have bought them otherwise.  But, for free, why not.

IMG_7745

Dinners were a mixed bag.

Monday:
Coq au vin, french bread, carrot/jicama/tomatoes

Tuesday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, applesauce
Late: Leftover shepard’s pie or Welsh Rarebit

Wednesday:
Enchiladas, corn

Thursday:
Early: Macaroni & cheese, green beans
Late: Homemade pizza

Friday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, carrot & jicama sticks
Late: Welsh Rarebit

Saturday:
Chili, corn bread, watermelon

Sunday:
Hot dogs and assorted sides for the little ones, who were the only ones home.

Grocery Spending

After being out of town for a week, this week was bound to be on the higher side.  But, it wasn’t too bad.

On Monday, I spent $120.84 at Wegman’s.  As you can see, it was a fairly thorough restocking.

IMG_7712

On Wednesday, I spent $76.74 at Shaw’s and $31.29 at Stop & Shop.  I was in a hurry so I mixed the pictures a bit.  If you swap the milk and the oatmeal, Shaw’s is on the left and Stop & Shop is on the right.

IMG_7716
IMG_7717

That closed out February so this last one is part of this week, but not part of February.  I made a small $15.55 trip to Stop & Shop to grab a few items that were on sale (and milk).

IMG_7720

That brought me to $244.42 which is not bad at all for a restocking week.

February TOTAL: $649.22

  • Stop & Shop: $76.08
  • Wegman’s: $157.48
  • BJs: $274.17
  • Other: $141.49
    • Local: $18.35
    • Star Market: $123.14
    • Trader Joe’s: $0
    • Target: $0
    • Other: $0

This was nice and low.  Even accounting for the fact that we were out of town for a week February had a low weekly average.

We largely managed to get back on track re eating also, after a month of sickness and travel.

Monday:
Pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes, caesar salad

Tuesday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, strawberries
Late: Homemade pizza

Wednesday:
Chicken noodle soup
English muffin bread

Thursday:
Early: Hot dogs, strawberries
Late: Steak, potato pancake, caesar salad

Friday:
Early: Macaroni & cheese, carrots
Late: Homemade pizza

Saturday:
Nacho chicken, brown rice, spinach salad, English muffin bread

Sunday:
Shepard’s pie, spinach salad

Grocery Update & What We Ate – Week 8, 2018

This will be a rather short post.

We were on vacation most of last week!  So, the only grocery shopping I did was $109.23 at BJ’s yesterday to start the restocking process.  Mostly milk.  And, I got rather lazy with the picture taking as I needed the milk and bread for lunch pretty much instantly.

IMG_7707

This coming week I’ll be at each of my rather regular grocery locations to restock appropriate items.

The budget while on vacation was terrible as we ate out for lunch and dinner every day.  However, this was included in our vacation purchase.  So, its in the vacation budget not the food budget.  I did bring food from home to have breakfasts in the hotel room that came from purchases you’ve seen earlier in the month.

As you will see tomorrow will not be a standard post either, but then we’ll likely get back on track.  Plus, I have new material so stay tuned!

Grocery Update & What We Ate – Week 7, 2018

Well, the sickness got much worse this week so the meals went downhill.  The past few weeks we’ve had one, maybe two, people sick at a time.  By midweek we had five people sick and meals were very hit or miss.

So, meals were almost exclusively based on what we happened to have in the house.  Monday we had Chicken Noodle Soup.  This used up the last of the Thanksgiving turkey broth among other things. I was hoping this would help end the sickness, but it didn’t work.

Tuesday we had pot roast, mashed potatoes, and carrots.  Because, we always have potatoes and carrots.

Wednesday we had takeout pizza because nobody felt like much more than that.  Even at that we didn’t eat much so Thursday was leftovers.  And, it was downhill from there.  Hopefully you’ll discover next week that we’ve recovered and are happily enjoying our temporary immunity to both the stomach bug and flu.  (Yes, we had flu shots.  No, they did not stop us from getting the flu this year.)

With all that, I made one trip to Stop & Shop, mostly for medicine.  I failed to take a picture of it.  But, for $12.56, I got one gallon of milk, apples, plus dried basil and thyme because they were on sale and I had coupons.

Signing off for now.

Grocery Spending

While I did make a number of stops this week, I purchased very few things and took next to no pictures.

On Tuesday, I spent $9.97 at Stop & Shop on 2lb of strawberries plus 18oz of blueberries.  I wanted to get sour cream also, but they were out so I got a rain check.

The strawberries were popular, so on Thursday I grabbed another pound for $2.99.

On Thursday I also spent $49.50 at Wegman’s.

IMG_7633
IMG_7636

Finally, on Saturday (new sale cycle) I grabbed another pound for $1.88!

That brought me to $64.42, more than balancing out last week.

The berries have mostly been eaten at lunch.  As for dinner:

Monday:
Tacos

Tuesday:
Early: Hot dogs, strawberries
Late: Homemade pizza

Wednesday:
Korean braised short ribs, green beans, rice

Thursday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, carrots & jicama
Late: Indian take-out

Friday:
Early: Macaroni & cheese, carrot sticks/cucumber/jicama/green pepper
Late: Homemade pizza

Saturday:
Spaghetti & meatballs, spinach salad

Sunday:
Bistro chicken, oven baked fries, carrot sticks/cucumber/jicama

Grocery Spending

Inevitably, after a low cost week, this one was higher.  It’s also been about a month since I’d made a big trip to BJs or gone to Shaw’s.  I did both this week.

On Monday, I spent $153.12 at Wegman’s.  Sodas were on sale, along with carrot puree, Brussels Sprouts, and the salad.  You’ll see a lot of these items showing up in the menu this week.  This was my last grocery trip in January so only this one will be reflected in the January numbers.

IMG_7609
IMG_7610

I had been wanting to do other shopping sooner, but sickness kept us confined to the house through mid-week.  Thursday evening I was able to run to the farm stand for a few items that totaled $18.35.  It was fundraising day for the elementary school so I’d had this day in the plan for a while.

IMG_7620

I also spent $32.23 at Stop & Shop Thursday night on items that were finishing up their sale cycle. I had planned to get some other cheese also, but they were out so I got a raincheck instead.  In many ways this is just as well since we don’t really need that other cheese right now.  I’ll pick it up at the sale price when we do.

IMG_7622

I did another batch of shopping on Saturday.  First, I spent $35.12 on oatmeal and pizza dough.  Unfortunately they were out of pizza cheese so I needed to go to another location (nobody else sells the brand we prefer) on Sunday.  I spent $11.28 on cheese; more than we needed for the Super Bowl, but enough to meet the minimum purchase for the best price.

IMG_7624

Then I ran over to Wegman’s for a few items, totaling $36.64.

IMG_7625

Saturday afternoon I went to BJ’s during baseball practice.  I spent $164.94 on items that should do us for most of the month, apart from the milk.

IMG_7626
IMG_7627

That brings me to $451.68 for the week.  Yes, a very high week.  But, because the week splits two months it will not all be reflected below; most will be in the February numbers.

January TOTAL: $1,075.23

  • Stop & Shop: $243.12
  • Wegman’s: $352.67
  • BJs: $295.18
  • Other: $184.26
    • Local: $22.85
    • Star Market: $64.16
    • Trader Joe’s: $0
    • Target: $73.28
    • Other: $23.97

Overall, not bad.  Some high weeks and some low weeks, but it leveled out.

We finished out the month on a positive note, but then things went downhill.  Maybe next week we can get back on track.

Monday:
Sear-roasted cod with Brussels Sprouts, bacon, and carrots puree

Tuesday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, broccoli
Late: Homemade pizza

Wednesday:
Mini meatloaves, mashed potatoes, spinach salad

Thursday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, strawberries
Late: Tuna noodle casserole

Friday:
Early: Pancakes/blueberry pancakes
Late: Homemade pizza

Saturday:
Chicken noodle soup, baguettes

Sunday:
Homemade pizza for all (Super Bowl!)

Grocery Spending

This was a good shopping week – not too many stops.

On Tuesday, I made as small stop – $22.60 – at Wegman’s.  The crackers were on sale.  The cake mix and icing are for a cake for the youngest boy’s birthday.  It happened but we haven’t done cake yet because I’m waiting for his present to arrive, hopefully this week.

IMG_7596

I made two stops on Wednesday.  First, I spent $36.98 at Target.  Juice was on my list.  Since it was on sale I bought a bunch.  The bars weren’t on sale, but this is the biggest bulk size I can find anywhere so its still better than buying the smaller boxes.

IMG_7603

On the way home, I spent $62.41 at Stop & Shop.  Everything was on sale except the milk.

IMG_7600
IMG_7602

Altogether that came to $121.99, which will go a long way towards balancing out the beginning of the month.

As for what we ate:

Monday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, broccoli
Late: Homemade macaroni & cheese

Tuesday:
Green tea poached salmon with soba

Wednesday:
Chicken pot pie, spinach salad

Thursday:
Early: Pancakes
Late: Steak, potato pancakes, spinach salad

Friday:
Early: Macaroni & cheese, carrot sticks/cucumber
Late: Homemade pizza

Saturday:
Chinese Take-Out (planned)

Sunday:
Braised pork, carrots, mashed potatoes

Grocery Spending

This was a good week, for the grocery budget anyway.  I’m not sure I fully made up for the previous overruns, but it is substantially lower than an average week so hopefully the month will work itself out.

I made three stops.

I spent $50.74 at Stop & Shop on Thursday, mostly on cheese (on sale) and milk.  Blueberries were still buy one, get one free so I got another two of those also.  Juice, beans, and potato salad were not on sale.

IMG_7576
IMG_7578

On Saturday, I made two stops.  First, I spent $96.28 at Wegman’s.  Yes, more milk!

IMG_7579
IMG_7582

Then, that afternoon I made a quick $58.11 stop at BJ’s.  There’s a BJ’s (not my usual one) near the winter baseball site which makes it reasonable to stop in fairly often.  It is not the healthiest collection, but we’re not going to eat it all at once either.

IMG_7583

That brought my total to $205.13, nicely under the roughly $250/week target.

And, what did we eat?

Monday:
Fish tacos, guacamole, pico de gallo

Tuesday:
Spaghetti & meatballs, spinach salad

Wednesday:
Tacos (ground turkey)

Thursday:
Early: Hot dogs, carrot sticks
Late: Homemade pizza

Friday (I was out):
Take out pizza

Saturday:
BBQ chicken wings, baked beans, potato salad, carrot sticks/cucumber slices, biscuits

IMG_7585

Sunday:
Chicken noodle soup, harvest bread

Grocery Update & What We Ate – Week 2, 2018

For better or worse, I was at a grocery store just about every day this week.  Not super efficient.  Despite this the weekly total came in at $265.33, which is pretty good.  I didn’t make up for last week, but stayed on par this week.  There’s a lot of produce too, which is what I need to use the items from the freezer.

On Tuesday I spent $64.16 at Shaw’s.  This was my monthly trip for oatmeal, pizza dough, and pizza cheese.  But, while there I discovered that they were having an unadvertised sale that brought Russet potatoes under $0.20/lb so I bought 30 pounds of those also.

IMG_7537

On Wednesday I spent $83.54 at Stop & Shop.  There was quite a bit on sale that was useful for us and it was a double gas points week.  Yes, I’m working through what is in the freezer, but the roast was 50% off.  I don’t have a bottom round in the freezer and this is a good price.  Plus we haven’t had beef stew yet this winter and I have lots of potatoes, carrots, and onions to use.

IMG_7542
IMG_7545

I spent $45.90 at Wegman’s on Thursday.  The primary purpose was diapers, which I had misjudged our usage of.  The salad (center) was free and I picked up a couple other items that, combined with what we already had at home, can complete our meal plan through this Friday.

IMG_7555

On Saturday I had to go someplace very near a BJ’s so I stopped in there for milk plus a few items that the other BJ’s had been out of on last week’s trip.  Hopefully this will be it for another month as it came to $60.44.

IMG_7563
IMG_7564

Finally, on Sunday I had an errand that took me near a Stop & Shop so I stopped in for a few items that were on sale.  I’ll probably visit Stop & Shop again later in the week for more blueberries and cheese (that this store was out of yesterday).  I spent $11.29.  With a coupon the pasta was $0.44/box.  The blueberries were buy one, get one free.

IMG_7566

So how did we use all of this?

Monday:
Chili, corn bread

Tuesday:
Early: Chicken nuggets, broccoli
Late: Homemade pizza

Wednesday:
Braised pork, mashed potatoes, carrots

Thursday:
Early: Hot dogs, carrot sticks & cucumber slices
Late: Welsh rarebit

Friday:
Early: Leftovers
Late: Homemade pizza

Saturday:
Beef stew, oatmeal bread, carrot sticks

Sunday:
Lemon chicken, pan fried potatoes, broccoli
