Last Week’s Accomplishments – Baseball & Soccer are Underway

As I’ve mentioned a few times, baseball got underway this week (soccer has been going for a few weeks already).

  • Got the older three to 2 baseball games + 1 soccer game each
  • Got oldest to 2 soccer practices + 1 baseball practice
  • Went to the mall and found one shirt at Gymboree for $7.99 + two Gap Chinos @ $11.99 each
  • Finished washing and putting away all winter gear – it’s remained cold so the coats/hats/gloves were still out
  • Started raking and general spring yard clean up
  • Planted our garden; I may try more than one round of plants this year since the season is starting off so cold.

Grocery Update (& May the 4th be with You)

As I mentioned last week, I won’t be posting a menu again until after baseball/soccer season.  There are just too few days when we’re all home to have dinner together.  It will be a month of quick meals & leftovers.  What you saw last week may be repeated many times!

I did make two trips to the grocery store.  First I went to Stop & Shop.  Everything was on sale except the margarine, which we were running out of.  This came in at $26.66 after sales and coupons (which totaled $20.10).  I felt pretty good about that.

I went to Wegman’s later in the week.  We were running low on granola bars; everything else was for a cheese plate the next day.  But, I was able to use this week’s $5 off coupon.

Total grocery costs for April came in a bit higher than they have been, but that was to be expected after a number of low months.  And, it was still within the acceptable range.

  • April TOTAL: $970.55
    • Stop & Shop: $159.79
    • BJs: $389.60
    • Other: $421.16
      • Local: $44.97
      • Wegman’s: $205.04
      • Star Market: $94.93
      • Trader Joe’s: $19.12
      • Target: $27.18
      • Other: $29.92

The Joys of Spring

Tomorrow is Little League Opening Day.  A much bigger to-do is made of this than it really needs with the parade, speeches, and such.  We do tend to skip those.  But, what it really means is that my six weeks of spring sports schedule hell (with a small respite on Memorial Day weekend) is beginning.  There will be very few family dinners and Saturdays the adults will be split to handle the two sets of activities.  Starting tomorrow most weeks we will have:

Monday evening – soccer practice for oldest; baseball game for twins (thankfully they’re on the same team); unfortunately these are at the same time, but not the same place so I’ll have to sort out how everyone is getting where they need to be

Tuesday evening – meeting for Mom (different each week, but somehow, thankfully, all on Tuesday which doesn’t have another conflict)

Wednesday evening – baseball game for oldest

Thursday evening – soccer practice for oldest

Saturday (needs a list) – soccer & baseball games x three kids

Sunday – baseball practice for oldest

Amazingly, we have very few conflicts.  We were anticipating having to make some tough decisions with the increased time commitments required of 3rd grade sports.

Frugal Twin Tips

Everyone’s budget and definition of frugal is different, but I’ll try to throw out a few thoughts.

I buy specific brands for a few things:
Gap/Gymboree/Lands End for pants because of fit/wear
Carters for pajamas because of fit
new brand names for shoes/boots (Stride Rite, New Balance, etc.) for fit/wear

That being said, I know when the clothing brands I buy are on their best sales of the year and buy what I need then, even if its off season. I also don’t buy shoes every 3 months, I don’t even go in to get them fitted until I think they need new ones. This means we do usually skip a size (or 2). But, I’ve found the brand names shoes do wear better than the cheap stuff.

Through size 5T, I shop a lot at Target. I’ve been very happy with their Circo brand for shirts, shorts (not pants), swimwear, and snow gear.  Once they hit kindergarten/size XS its a different story and I go elsewhere.

I don’t shop Craigslist/ebay/etc and I barely shop consignment sales/stores.  The exception is Gap chinos which one of mine likes to wear everyday and which are often readily available in excellent condition at consignment sales if I happen to be there.

Finally, I would say think about what you need. And try things on every season to confirm that it really does need to be replaced vs the size on the tag. We do very well on 4-6 outfits per child. It does mean doing laundry more often, but its still the same number of loads. And, they have favorites. Even though I can, and do, use hand-me-downs I prefer to have one child use up the item so the next gets the new/preferred version.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Vacation Week

School vacation week meant everyone was home with me.

  • Made a cheesecake – I hadn’t done this before. While it came out as it was supposed to, I prefer dry cheesecakes and this is the moist, custardy type.  So, I’m going to be looking for a new recipe.
  • Took the boys bowling
  • Got to the last three more dentist appointments for this cycle
  • Fixed 7 books
  • Listed one item in an online yard sale – I’ve had yard sales before. But, this is my first foray into online yard sales so we’ll see how it goes.  I’m hoping well as I have other things to list.
  • Attended the memorial service – All of the boys did very well. Fittingly for this year, we were graced with snow flurries.
  • Received and deposited the towing reimbursement (earlier than I anticipated)
  • Finished porting this blog to WordPress
  • Upgraded to the latest version of Quicken – without which I would lose download access
  • Started the textile recycling bag with 3 pairs of pants, 8 socks, and 1 shirt. There’s a lot more to join that lot before I turn it in.  But, it needs to warm up so I can cycle out the pants and long sleeve shirts.

Weekly Menu

I made two relatively small grocery trips last week.  First, I went to Stop & Shop.

IMG_3177

This purchase just tipped me over $50 to use a $5 off $50 coupon.

Later in the week I went to Wegman’s to use my $7 off there.  I spent just over the necessary $25 to use all the coupons.

There’s nothing particularly remarkable in either purchase.

This coming week is the first week of baseball season, meaning baseball games, baseball practices, soccer games, and soccer practices all start competing with dinner.  I’ve posted my menu plan for this week, but since we’re not going to get many/any family dinners for the next 6 weeks I’m taking a hiatus from menu posting.  Otherwise it will start to look pretty boring as this might be the plan every week.

I will still photo and post grocery trips and generally comment on the week.

I Need a New Pizza Dough Recipe

I’m not sure what’s gone wrong with my favorite store bought pizza dough, but it’s been very wet and sticky for months now.  Before the kids were born, I made our pizza dough and I’ve been talking about getting back to that.  This is pushing me over the edge.

A while back I tried The Frugal Girl’s pizza dough recipe.  I like her potato bread recipe so I thought this one might work out.  But, it tasted too much like saltine crackers and I wasn’t overly fond of the texture either.  I got so annoyed last week that I bought the Wegman’s pizza dough.  It was worse.  The texture was fine, but the taste was all off.

The pizza dough I used to make was from the old William’s Sonoma Bread cookbook.  It was fine, but nothing spectacular.  I can do better.

I’ve found six recipes on the internet that come recommended (in the order I intend to try them):

  • Peter Reinhart’s Napoletana Pizza Dough
  • Refrigerator Bread
  • Peter Reinhart’s Neo-Neopolitan Pizza Dough
  • King Arthur Flour’s The Easiest Pizza You’ll Ever Make
  • Roberta’s Pizza Dough
  • Hacker-Free Neapolitan Pizza for a Home Kitchen

This seemed like a good month to get started on trying these since we’ll be eating a lot of quick, late dinners – i.e., pizza.  I’m going to aim for one every 1-2 weeks and I’ll let you know how they go.  Of course if I come to one that is just to die for, I may not get to the rest!

I’ve Found a Textile Recycling Box

I got word a few weeks back that one of these had appeared near us.  The box has actually been there since the fall, but I was under the mistaken impression that items needed to be in good condition to go in.  I’ve only recently determined that this is a textile recycling box, vs a donation box.

Anyway, I expect to fill up a bag to take over soon as we cycle from winter to summer clothes.  I’ve come across another batch of socks with holes.  It’s painfully apparent that there are many items that will not survive as hand-me-downs after this winter.  At this point I’m making a mental note while I let them wear the clothes to play outside, but I’m not going to store them.

Finally, my twin who prefers chinos had 4 pairs he was cycling through.  When I was getting ready for the memorial service I figured I had him covered for nice clothes.  But, no!  It turns out 3 of 4 pairs had holes in the knees – varying in significance but enough that all will come out of circulation immediately.  The 4th was in my repair pile for some buttons that had come off.  As it is he is on the verge of moving to the next size, of which I already found him a few pairs of chinos.  So, first wearing was to the memorial service.

School Vacation Week

The boys are off this week and without thinking too hard we’ve got lots to do.

Monday was Patriots Day.  We were going to go to the parade, but it was canceled because of awful weather – very cold rain and high winds.  So, I took advantage of the cold (40s), wet spring day to make a big, oven heavy dinner.  It does not match my menu (link to 4/20).  We had ham, baked cauliflower, homemade egg bread, green beans, raisin sauce, and homemade cheese cake.  The boys did not like the cheesecake, but we made them all try some.  They’ve never had it before and the idea of cheese in cake was really throwing them all off.

Tuesday I took them bowling.  My 4y has been asking for this for a few weeks now.  I’d intended for us to play two games, but the 2y wasn’t really interested and the 9y lost the first game and therefore all interest.  So we came home.  The weather was beautiful so after lunch they went outside.  The trouble with outside this time of year is you get this:

IMG_3179

I’ve told them they need to clean it off and not repeat that feat as it isn’t fair to those who don’t want to get dirty to have their play things covered with mud.

Today the older three have dentist appointments so we’ll all be along for that trip.  Tomorrow we have a memorial service to attend.  Friday we have nothing scheduled.  I’m hoping for nice weather so the boys can be outside all day before heading back to school next week.
