Last Week’s Accomplishments – Parent / Teacher Conferences 2017 are (Almost) Done!

21 Tuesday Nov 2017

Yes, I had both the preschool and middle school conferences last week.  One of the middle school teachers wasn’t available at the regular conference times so I’m meeting with him in two weeks, but that’s only a 10 minute conference.  Getting the bulk down is good enough.

So what else happened?

  • It was first grade math night.  For this one, specifically, they look for older siblings (grades 4+) to volunteer so the older three boys went also.  They ran some of the stations for the first graders.  All seemed to do a good job with their tasks and the evening went smoothly.
  • We went to four swimming lessons, one gym class, one open swim session, and one open gym session.
  • I went to a school meeting regarding teen sleep vs school start times – info only, no decisions at this point.
  • The twins went to math morning.
  • The process of setting up baseball teams for next year got underway.
  • I planned the Thanksgiving menu and did most of the non-perishable shopping.
  • I’ve continued to make progress on the top-down house cleaning project.  This week I unpacked and put away three of the remaining boxes from the move.  That helped me finish off one room.

That will be it for this week.  I’m taking Thursday and Friday as holidays so I’ll post again next Monday.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – Soccer is Done!

Yes, soccer season has come to an end, and not a moment too soon.  Actually, the last day of 1st grade soccer was cancelled because temperatures dropped here from roughly 70 to roughly 40 seemingly overnight.  Temperature at gametime last Saturday was forecast for 22° so they (wisely) cancelled K-2 soccer for that morning.  I shouldn’t complain though because we had a wonderfully warm and dry fall season.

  • The 4th and 6th grade soccer games did happen Saturday afternoon at roughly 35°.
  • Both Monday soccer practices happened in the rain.  Thursday practice was fine.  Friday practice was cancelled because it was so cold.
  • Math morning happened.
  • Two boys went on a school field trip.
  • Four boys went to swimming lessons.
  • We went to one birthday party.
  • The public schools had a four day weekend for Veteran’s Day.  Preschool was in session on Monday.
  • The older boys enjoyed seeing Thor: Ragnarok in the theater.
  • We watched Back to the Future at home on a cold, rainy Monday.
  • I organized the pantry.  Since I wrote that post, we’ve eaten 2 packages of plain oatmeal, the popcorn, and the open package of dates.  I figured prompt progress would be the most effective.
  • I changed all of the filters in the house.

  • I purchased a new glass to replace one the got broken.  Thankfully the store still carries the same pattern from many years ago.

Accomplishments – Halloween Week 2017

I showed some Halloween pictures in my October summary.  But, how about a few more!

  • The boys went to 4th grade math morning.
  • We had four soccer practices and three soccer games.
  • Only one had swimming lessons this week; most were cancelled for Halloween.
  • We enjoyed the Halloween parade at the elementary school.
  • Our oldest went to an indoor carting birthday party, which he quite enjoyed.
  • I had three parent / teacher conferences.
  • I signed up for Middle School parent / teacher conferences.
    • This presented many dilemmas, which hopefully I’ll figure out when I go so I can do this better next year.
      • First, you have to decide which teachers to speak with.  Our oldest helpfully said, “If I were you I would talk to all of them.”
      • There are seven (really more, but some only conference as a group) and conferences are 10 minutes each so this didn’t seem too bad.
      • But, then I realized that if a conference ended at 10:10 and another started at 10:10 I would have no travel time to get from one to the other.  So, I left gaps, but this means I’m there fore much of the day.  If everything really does run promptly, I’ll try to schedule nearby conferences in adjacent time slots next year.
      • Also, conferences are spread out over one full day plus five half days.  One teacher isn’t there on the full day of conferences.  I decided I couldn’t fit everyone in on the half day so I’m going to one stand-alone 10 minute conference.
    • I took the youngest to her first gym class – really just come play on all the mats, bouncy house, etc.  She’s not napping in the morning anymore so this seemed like a good once a week activity for the winter months.
    • I had everyone try on snow jackets and snow pants.  I’ll need to purchase two full sets and one person will move up to the next size, but we already have it.
      • We’ll need to try on boots, hats, and gloves this weekend.

The weather here is feeling more fall-like.  We had a very warm September and October with next to no rain.  This past week we got a few colder days (seasonable, though they feel cold after the prolonged warm) and some light rain.  I would prefer an occasional downpour instead of a lot of mist, but some moisture is nice for the plants.  It looks like we’ll be in this slightly cooler, slightly wetter pattern for a while now.

This is getting posted a little late, but I consider it an accomplishment that I’m getting it out today at all.

In October we:

  • Sports
    • Went to a total of seven soccer events (practices or games) per week.  I believe two didn’t happen due to a coach’s illness and rain.  The weather has been wonderful overall.
    • Fall baseball clinics finished.  We had three this month.
    • Weekly swimming lessons continued for the middle four.
  • School
    • Started 4th grade math mornings.  These will continue weekly throughout the school year.
    • Attended 4th grade math night.  This is a once a year activity.
    • I took the younger two apple picking with the preschool class.
    • I went to Back to School Night for the Middle School and Preschool.  I don’t think many people can say that!
    • I went to three school-related meetings.
  • Family
    • The kids went to a total of three birthday parties.
    • We went to one play date.
    • The boys and I had haircuts.
    • We all got flu shots.
    • I went to an annual rummage sale.  I particularly like this one because it is on weekdays, vs the typical Saturday.  I think I did pretty well for $30!
      IMG_7206
  • Halloween
    • We went for the hay maze and potato cannons.
      IMG_7106
    • We carved pumpkins.
    • IMG_7211
      IMG_7214
      IMG_7220
    • The kids went trick or treating.

As with September, I didn’t get through all my goals, but I feel I made good progress.

  • Clean the house.  This means everything – under/behind furniture, all surfaces, inside the furniture/cabinets themselves, unfinished areas, etc.  My plan is to start at the top and work my way down.  Realistically, at halfway through the month this will probably only get part way done.  I still didn’t get this all done.  But, I’ve finished all the bathrooms and two bedrooms.  So, not the order I had proposed but I’m about halfway there.
  • Get everyone a haircut.
  • Update the boys’ bank accounts.  These have been running on paper notes since we moved.
  • Inventory the freezers and plan to use up anything that’s been there for a while.  This is largely in anticipation of holiday meat sales.  Not done.
  • Get back on track with four blog posts per week.  Didn’t quite make four.  I did get back up to three from (often) one.  So, good progress.

Here are goals for November.  Fall sports finish up mid-month, which I hope will free up our schedule significantly:

  • Finish cleaning the house.  This means everything – under/behind furniture, all surfaces, inside the furniture/cabinets themselves, unfinished areas, etc.  My plan is to start at the top and work my way down.  This is halfway done already.  I expect to finish everything (except maybe the basement and garage).
  • Inventory the freezers and plan to use up anything that’s been there for a while.  This is largely in anticipation of holiday meat sales.  Inventory the pantry for things that need to be used up / seasonal items / items that go on sale seasonally.
  • Get back on track with four blog posts per week.
  • Order and send Christmas cards.

Accomplishments – How did September go?

24 Tuesday Oct 2017

≈ Comments Off on Accomplishments – How did September go?

I didn’t post updates every week in September, in fact not since Sept 19.  So, this covers the end of the month as well as how I did vs the goals I laid out in August.  Even though we’re more than halfway through October, I’ll add some goals for this month too so we can review in a few weeks and see how things are going.

So, in the second half of September:

  • One child had 4 baseball practices.
  • We had four soccer practices, split between two children.
  • We had five soccer games.
  • Swimming lessons continued for four children.
  • Two children went out to dinner with a friend for a fundraiser.
  • Elementary school picture day happened.  I haven’t seen the photos yet.
  • We went to two birthday parties.
  • I went to some meetings.
  • Elementary Back to School Night happened.
  • I participated in the twins group consignment sale.

So, how did my September goals go:

  • Clean the house.  This means everything – under/behind furniture, all surfaces, inside the furniture/cabinets themselves, unfinished areas, etc.  My plan is to start at the top and work my way down.  No.  I did get more things cleaned than over the summer, but not to this level and not this organized.  Bumping to October.
  • Identify, tag, and sort items for the twin’s tag sale at the end of the month.
  • Go to BJ’s.  This will be on Sept. 6.  It is the first actual full day of school for everyone and I have coupons that expire that day.
  • Get a haircut.  No.  I did get it scheduled for October though.

And with that, here are goals for October:

  • Clean the house.  This means everything – under/behind furniture, all surfaces, inside the furniture/cabinets themselves, unfinished areas, etc.  My plan is to start at the top and work my way down.  Realistically, at halfway through the month this will probably only get part way done.
  • Get everyone a haircut.
  • Update the boys’ bank accounts.  These have been running on paper notes since we moved.
  • Inventory the freezers and plan to use up anything that’s been there for a while.  This is largely in anticipation of holiday meat sales.
  • Get back on track with four blog posts per week.

September Accomplishments to Date – School has Started!

I’ll cover what we did over the summer in a variety of posts through the fall, but for now let’s focus on the past 10 days or so.

School started on August 29.  But between the slow uptake and misc. holidays, we don’t have a true full week of school until the week of Sept 25.  What did we do with the extended summer?

  • We went blueberry picking.

IMG_6854.JPG

  • We’ve been to the farmer’s market a few twice.  We made our annual trip to Dunkin’ Donuts.
  • The weather has been gorgeous so we’ve spent a lot of time outside.  And, BBQing.
  • I tagged many items for the sale at the end of the month.  Many more to go.
  • We had visiting day and the first day of preschool.  There was some apprehension about the new classroom, but it has evaporated.
  • I’ve caught up on some things that had been getting pushed off all summer.  But, I’m sure it will be at least the end of October before the backlog is cleared.
  • Fall baseball and soccer have started.  We had 3 soccer games.
  • Middle school had picture day.
  • Two went to a Red Sox game with town Little League.

This week the remaining fall activities will start bringing us to our full schedule for this year.

Summer Spontaneity

Well, things have been a bit hit or miss here over the last month.  With summer upon us the kids are home full time.  It’s basically swimming, baseball, and whatever else we come up with to do.

This year I’ve been trying to be a little less scheduled and go with the flow.  Unfortunately that means less blogging.  Fortunately, it means yes to other things.  We’ve spontaneously (i.e., ask and go essentially immediately):

  • Gone to the pool.
  • Gone for ice cream.
  • Gone to McDonald’s.
  • Played with our neighbors.
  • Gone to the farmer’s market.
  • Gotten the screen replaced on my phone (not the best, but we did it super promptly).
  • Played some board games.
  • Played some video games.
  • Watched some movies.
  • Read some books.
  • Gone for a walk.

We’ve also, in a more planned way,

  • Played at the park.  Many times.
  • Gone strawberry picking.  This is about 8 lbs of strawberries, or what remains of them.

IMG_6581

  • Gone to the pool.
  • Taken swimming lessons (Less often than I would have liked as we’ve had issues with temps in the 60s and/or rain/thunderstorms, none of which make for good swimming weather.)

IMG_6573

  • Played baseball games.
  • Been to baseball tryouts.
  • One attended multiple baseball camps.
  • Two attended video game design camp.
  • One attended soccer camp.
  • I gave a pile of stuff that had been sitting in the basement to a neighbor for his yard sale.
  • The builder replaced the siding on one side of the house, a result of a manufacturing issue so the vendor covered costs/supplying materials/etc.
  • We went to the town carnival.
  • Plus the standard grocery shopping, though including the farmer’s market because it’s summer.

In summary, I’ll try to post when I can for the next few weeks, but we’re trying to be out doing which is always the priority.

While school doesn’t let out until later this week, last week was dominated by 5th grade activities:

  • Graduation ceremony
  • Pool party
  • Singing the National Anthem at opening night for minor league baseball

We also had:

  • The last of the spring baseball activities
  • Two birthday parties
  • One Dr. appointment
  • The last day of preschool for this year

On the house front, our patio installation is almost finished.  We need the sod/seed to take and then the patio will be sealed before we move the cooking and seating onto it.

The patio is about 300 ft² using Pavers by Ideal’s Andover Collection – Oxford grey set stone pattern with GrandStone.

Last Two Week’s Accomplishments – Spring Sports are Done!

Yes, soccer and baseball are finished for the spring.  Now, a short respite until summer.  We would have liked to continue baseball for one more week, as our oldest lost in the second round of the playoffs.  But, it was a tight game to finish out their season.

So, this will be the last post for a while that is sports dominated:

  • We had 6 baseball games and 3 baseball practices.
  • We had 6 soccer games and 2 soccer practices.
  • Our oldest went to the 5th grade track meet.
  • Our oldest had a few extra baseball lessons.
  • Our oldest went on the 5th grade camping trip.
  • We had our last Math Morning.
  • I went to a retirement party for the preschool director.
  • I also met the incoming preschool director.
  • We had a preschool play date.
  • I had a doctor appointment.
  • We attended two birthday parties.
  • It finally warmed up so we went to the pool.  Our preschooler spotted a bunny.

IMG_6493

  • The warm weather must have been exhausting because multiple people fell asleep on the floor.
IMG_6460

  • We thought a sky scraper had sprouted in town, especially as the first time we saw it, it was a dark and rainy day.  In actuality it is a church steeple wrapped in scaffolding, which is a bit easier to see in this sunny day picture.

Last Week’s Accomplishments – A Break in the Rain

≈ Comments Off on Last Week’s Accomplishments – A Break in the Rain

It did rain Monday, so that baseball game got bumped to Tuesday.  But, otherwise the week’s schedule played out fully for maybe the first time this spring.

  • Our two older soccer players had travel evaluations.
  • I took the younger two to an animal show at preschool.  Sorry for the blury pictures.  Neither animals nor children were up for staying still.  It’s an armadillo.  Our youngest was particularly fascinated that it could roll up into a ball, softball sized.

IMG_6387

  • We had three soccer games plus four baseball games.  No soccer practices this week between the rain and the concert.  We went to two baseball practices.
  • We missed one baseball game for the 5th grade spring concert.  This wasn’t popular, but school activities take precedence.
  • We went to one playdate and one birthday party.
  • I finally got the car rental associated with the rear ender repair sorted between Commerce and Enterprise.
  • Our oldest had a baseball hitting lesson.
  • I turned in registration for preschool next year.
  • I registered for fall soccer for three and summer soccer camp for one.
  • We went to the BBQ festival.  This is popular every year.
